5 IT Leaders Share Their Hybrid Cloud Challenges

VMware Staff

Cloud computing revolutionized industries and allowed companies to scale to unprecedented heights. Organizations need increased agility, better reliability, and performance. They also need the chance to deploy new technologies and services at speed. It’s an approach that has sent global adoption soaring. Globally, the RightScale 2019 State of the Cloud Report from Flexera reports that:

  • 94 percent of firms now use cloud technology in some form or another.
  • 69 percent opt for a hybrid cloud strategy.
  • 58 percent make hybrid part of their multi-cloud strategy.

Cloud adoption varies greatly by geography, with the US in the lead, followed by Europe. But Asia Pacific and Japan (APJ) is an emerging force. The region’s cloud growth is driven by increased usage of cloud-based services and the deployment of new data centers across the region.

However, it remains true that all companies, regardless of geography, share common challenges during cloud migration and after adopting cloud technologies. Their cloud challenges include:

  • Overall cost and managing cloud spend.
  • Lack of resources and skills.
  • Incompatible infrastructure.
  • Security and compliance.

Five leading APJ organizations share how a hybrid cloud strategy helped them overcome these cloud challenges and transform their businesses:

“We have an amazing team with cloud backgrounds, but transforming existing enterprise apps into cloud-native equivalents is extremely difficult. Even for our private cloud apps, migrating them to public cloud presented risks if they were not carefully re-platformed and re-tested. VMware Cloud on AWS coupled with Trend Micro Deep Security, smooths that out, saving us months of time and thousands of man-hours,” says Zack Milem, Cloud Solution Architect, Trend Micro.

“By combining the best of both worlds of VMware SDDC and Enterprise PKS, the new infrastructure provides the best resources and components to help us improve our DevOps cycle. Our developers now can deliver applications faster and more easily with scalable, reliable and automated IT operations,” says Donald Mak, Chief Information Officer, Chow Sang Sang.

“IndusInd Bank has a reputation for being a leader in delivering superior customer experience. To create a robust platform for our evolving digital experience capabilities, we needed a scalable and agile solution that could handle a significant increase in customer transactions in both the assisted and direct channels. We also wanted consistency and speed in the delivery model,” says Biswabrata Chakravorty, Chief Information Officer, IndusInd Bank.

“For mission-critical workloads, VMware Cloud on AWS allowed us to enhance the on-premise private cloud setup, with the flexibility to scale up on demand across private clouds in AWS and on-premise, thereby ensuring we leverage the proven capabilities of scale with consistency and availability for our businesses.”

“We needed a cloud solution that could modernize our infrastructure without any disruption to our customers during the migration process. We tested several public clouds, but realized at a certain point that we weren’t getting the full scale of customer experience improvements that we hoped for, partly due to existing architecture not always aligning with a public cloud design,” says Rob Annandale, Head of Infrastructure and Operations, SuperChoice.

“You can have all the monitoring in the world, but what really matters is the customer’s perspective is how fast they feel the website is transacting, how deeply they trust in it as a secure and stable space,” continues Annandale. “That’s why we value the technical sustainability and agility Macquarie Cloud brings. And so far, the feedback from our customers has been overwhelmingly positive, so we have no doubts on the ability of the Macquarie Cloud, and VMware’s Cloud Provider Platform architecture it’s built on, to support even greater demand in the coming years.”

“While this journey initially began as a refresh program, it quickly evolved to much more once we understood how we could embrace new technology to transform how our customers engage in the digital world,” says Scott Tivendale, Capability Lead, Software-Defined Data Centre, Cenitex. “The VMware software-defined data center (SDDC) will take us from our current hosting environment into the future. This gives us the higher consolidation we need and drives efficiencies through the platform. This ranges from customer self-service through to automatic diagnosis and resolution.
