Educators Cut Costs, Streamline Management and Go Green with VMware View™ and VMware ThinApp®

VMware desktop virtualization solutions improve student access to technology while paving the way for a more sustainable future

PALO ALTO, Calif. – July 28, 2011 – VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW), the global leader in virtualization and cloud infrastructure, today announced growing momentum for desktop virtualization with VMware View™ and VMware ThinApp® as educators look to provide students with better access to applications across devices, expand the boundaries of learning and put campuses on a more sustainable path for the future.

VMware View and VMware ThinApp are allowing schools to reduce the deployment time of PCs from eight hours to eight minutes and log on times by up to 90 percent on older machines. Not only is this allowing schools to streamline the time and resources required to manage desktop environments, but this is also allowing them to provide more students with better access to coursework, less downtime and a consistent learning experience across devices and locations. By leveraging thin and zero clients in conjunction with these solutions, education leaders are additionally delivering energy-efficient solutions that reduce their carbon footprint and cut costs.

A recent survey of community colleges in North America conducted by the Center for Digital Education, found that colleges are putting multiple sustainability practices in place to decrease energy consumption. According to the survey, commissioned by VMware:

  • 54 percent of responding colleges have instruments to measure energy efficiencies;
  • 60 percent use e-waste recycling efforts and Earth-friendly disposal; and
  • 27 percent of responding community colleges are pursuing transparency about their carbon footprint — a 16 percent increase since last year.
Lake Land College, Illinois

With ever increasing demand for better technology access from students, faculty and staff, the IT administrators at Lake Land College, in Mattoon, Illinois (3 hours south of Chicago) are investing in high-tech solutions that will reduce energy consumption as part of a campus-wide effort to be carbon neutral by 2016. With more than 1,000 seats of VMware View deployed across their 5 main locations and plans to roll out another 800, Lake Land has been able to streamline IT management, improve student access, and take advantage of zero clients to cut IT energy usage in half.  This has saved the college more than $80,000 a year in electricity costs across 1,400 users.

Florida Atlantic University, Florida

When the College of Engineering & Computer Science at Florida Atlantic University set out to plan its brand new building, a primary goal was to create a building that would be a model for environmentally friendly design and engineering. VMware desktop virtualization solutions provide access to large amounts of computing power available via the schools datacenter, while the university has saved a significant amount of power with VMware View by turning to thin clients – just 15 watts for a thin client vs. 150 watts for a traditional desktop PC. In addition, by deploying VMware ThinApp in a VMware View virtualized environment, the university can quickly provide students, researchers and developers the engineering applications that they need – including AutoCAD, video game development and other visually intensive applications.

Western Wayne School District, Pennsylvania

By virtualizing its desktops using VMware View and thin clients, Western Wayne School District has been able to update hardware and software district-wide to ensure better access to applications and a consistent learning experience across all of its students. The district is now building out one of the first “green” IT campuses in Pennsylvania with two thin client computer labs running VMware View desktops hosted from the High School nine miles away.
