VMware Extends Support for Microsoft .NET Developers to Europe

VMware to Give Away US $300,000 Worth of its Popular Workstation Software at Microsoft Tech Ed 2001 in Barcelona

Barcelona, Spain -- 2 July 2001 — VMware, Inc., the global leader in virtualization software for Intel computers, announced today that it will extend its .NET developer special promotion to attendees of the Microsoft Tech Ed 2001 conference in Barcelona, which is being held 3-6 July. VMware gave away 1,000 copies of its popular VMware Workstation software, valued at $300,000, recently at the Microsoft Tech Ed 2001 in Atlanta and will give away another 1,000 copies next week in Barcelona -- for a total value for the give away promotion of nearly $600,000.

.NET developers and other attendees who visit the VMware booth (C19) daily at 1200 will have a chance to get their fully licensed complimentary copy of VMware Workstation, which lists at US $299. Distribution will be on a first-come, first-served basis with a limit of one copy per person.

VMware Workstation enables developers to streamline the development, testing, and deployment of applications in today’s complex computing environments, resulting in faster time to deployment, higher quality, and lower cost.

The version of VMware Workstation that will be given away at Tech Ed 2001 runs on Windows NT and Windows 2000 operating systems, and installs easily, just like a standard Windows application. Each virtual machine is the equivalent of a full PC, right down to the BIOS. Users will be able to:

  • Run multiple operating systems simultaneously on one PC -- no more dual booting
  • Add new operating systems without repartitioning disks
  • Display in a window or in full-screen mode
  • Configure and use full networking, dial-up access, and file-sharing support
  • Run Microsoft MS-DOS, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 operating systems, all on the same computer. (It also works with the Windows XP Beta. VMware Workstation will fully support Windows XP when it becomes available from Microsoft)
  • Network together multiple virtual machines in "network in a box" virtual networks -- ideal for learning and developing .NET server technologies
  • Evaluate new products and technologies, such as Visual Studio .NET Beta 2, safely within a virtual machine, without disrupting your production desktop
  • Instantly restore suspended VMware sessions -- no waiting for systems to boot
  • Rollback any changes to an environment with Undoable Disks
  • Nonpersistent disks provide automatic rollback of changes to an environment -- ideal for repetitive QA testing
