San Francisco Business Times Bestows Top Honors on VMware

PALO ALTO, Calif., October 28, 2002 — VMware, Inc., the leading provider of virtual computing software for industry-standard computers, today announced that it has received the San Francisco Business Times 2002 HotTech Rising Star award. The judging criteria used by the Business Times editors and a panel of independent judges included leadership, revenue growth and potential, customers, partners and investments in future growth.

"This year has been a phenomenal year for us as we continue to expand our customer base and product line," said Diane Greene, president and chief executive officer of VMware. "Our customers have found that our virtual machine products transform the way they do computing while providing significant return on investment."

VMware’s virtual machine products are used for server consolidation, software lifecycle management, high availability and disaster recovery, operating system migration and legacy application compatibility, training and sales demos and technical support.

VMware became the first company to deliver virtual machine software for Intel systems when it shipped VMware Workstation in 1999. In 2001, VMware entered the server market with two enterprise server virtual machine products - ESX Server and GSX Server - that let companies partition Intel servers to obtain full utilization and scalability of large enterprise servers.

Today VMware is the only company with virtual machine products for Intel servers, and the company has more than 1,200 enterprise server customers, including Black & Decker, Chevron, Circuit City, Guardian Life, Intrawest, Jones-Sun Apparel, Lockheed Missiles and Space Operations, National Gypsum, Saks, Welch Foods and Wendy's. VMware also has strategic partnerships with the leading Intel hardware vendors, including Dell, HP, IBM, NEC and Stratus.
