VMware Receives Network Computing’s ‘Well-Connected’ Award

VMware Receives Network Computing's 'Well-Connected' Award

Market-leading Entry-level Server Virtualization Product Honored for Innovation

PALO ALTO, Calif., May 30, 2006 —VMware, Inc., the global leader in virtual infrastructure software for industry-standard systems, today announced that VMware GSX Server has won Network Computing's 12th Annual Well-Connected award, taking top honors in the Virtual Machine Software category.

"The Well-Connected Awards are unique because they're the only industry awards given by technologists based on real-world use and integration. We view all products, technologies and services from the same perspective as our readers—our peers —do," said John Siefert, publisher of Network Computing. "This is an important distinction from any other award program —the products selected in the Well-Connected awards have been tested in an actual business environment and judged by our editors themselves. They are truly innovative solutions that work —and we have the metrics to prove it."

"VMware GSX Server 3.2 is virtual machine software that allows you to run multiple operating systems as independent 'systems' within a single physical server. For server consolidation, this is an administrator's dream," said Don MacVittie, senior technology editor at Network Computing. "GSX Server has better management tools and support for more operating systems than its competitors plus advanced virtual machine functionality, such as virtual CD-ROMs."

VMware GSX Server, first introduced five years ago, enables users to quickly provision new server capacity by partitioning a physical Windows or Linux server into multiple virtual machines. The successor to VMware GSX Server is the recently-introduced, feature-packed, entry-level VMware Server.

VMware Server is the first commercially available server virtualization product with support for 64-bit virtual machines and support for Intel Virtualization Technology. In addition, VMware Server supports Virtual SMP, a technology that enables single virtual machine to span multiple physical processors. VMware Server is available as a free download at: www.vmware.com/download/server/.

"We are pleased to receive this award which recognizes the best entry-level server virtualization product in the industry," said Dan Chu, senior director of developer products at VMware. "Over the last few months, we’ve seen hundreds of thousands of beta downloads for VMware Server, formerly known as GSX Server. By making VMware Server a free download, we’ve set the gold standard for all customers and users in terms of introductory virtualization, while also making available the option to add world-class management with VirtualCenter and to upgrade to our enterprise-class suite of products for large-scale production server consolidation, business continuity and hosting desktops."
