VMware Desktop and Server Virtualization Products Win InfoWorld 2006 Technology of the Year Awards

InfoWorld Calls 2006 the ‘Year of the Virtual x86’

PALO ALTO, Calif., January 23, 2006 —VMware, Inc., the global leader in virtual infrastructure software for industry-standard systems, today announced that VMware Workstation received the InfoWorld 2006 Technology of the Year award in the best desktop virtualization category. In addition, VMware ESX Server and VMware VirtualCenter received the InfoWorld 2006 Technology of the Year award in the best server virtualization category, marking the second consecutive year that VMware has won this prestigious award.

InfoWorld's annual Technology of the Year awards identify significant technologies of the past year that promise to make the greatest impact on enterprise IT strategies and honor the products that best exemplify the implementation of those technologies.

"Our annual awards highlight progress across nearly the entire enterprise IT landscape," said Steve Fox, InfoWorld's editor-in-chief. "InfoWorld's 2006 Technology of the Year Award winners represent the best products defining, and often redefining, the role of IT and resulting business impact."

VMware virtual infrastructure simplifies IT so companies leverage their storage, network and computing resources to control costs and respond faster. The VMware virtual infrastructure approach to IT management creates virtual services out of the physical IT infrastructure, enabling administrators to allocate these virtual resources quickly to the business units that need them most. Hardware management is completely separated from software management, and hardware equipment can be treated as a single pool of processing, storage and networking power to be allocated and de-allocated on the fly to various software services. In a virtual infrastructure, users see resources as if they were dedicated to them while the administrator manages and optimizes resources globally across the enterprise.

VMware ESX Server, used by tens of thousands of enterprises worldwide today, is virtual infrastructure software for partitioning, consolidating and managing servers in mission-critical environments. VMware VirtualCenter is virtual infrastructure management software for enterprises that want to build cost-effective next-generation computing environments and optimized data centers.

Millions today use VMware Workstation to accelerate software development, testing and deployment and increase product quality. VMware Workstation 5.5, the newest release of Workstation, includes support for 64-bit guests, Virtual SMP and Intel Virtualization Technology (VT), making VMware Workstation 5.5 a powerful platform to accelerate the development, testing and support of next-generation applications.

"We are honored to win these prestigious awards recognizing our ongoing commitment to innovation and excellence," said Brian Byun, vice president of products and alliances at VMware. "These awards underscore the value of VMware desktop and server virtualization products and the broad support they enjoy from the enterprises that have standardized on them. As we look ahead, we’re committed to continue bringing useful and innovative technology to market."
