Carbon Black Opens Research and Development Office in Greater Portland, Oregon to Expand Threat Research and Product Innovation in Endpoint Security

WALTHAM, Mass.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Carbon Black, a leader in next-generation endpoint security, today announced the opening of its newest office in Hillsboro, Oregon. The office will serve as a center for research and development, with a focus on bringing new products to market that will continue to help anticipate and prevent future and unknown cyberattacks.

Hillsboro lies just outside of Portland, a city that experienced a 40-percent growth in its tech talent pool from 2011 to 2016, and is home to major tech companies including Intel and Yahoo!

Venture capital investment in Oregon startups reached $348 million in 2017 compared to $302 million the previous year, which will continue to drive talent to the area.

“The explosion of cloud and a mobile workforce has made endpoints and people the new perimeter. Signature-based security is no longer an adequate defense against threats,” said Ryan Polk, Carbon Black’s chief product officer. “Security today requires innovative thinking and qualified cybersecurity experts, both of which the Oregon tech community promises. Our new office will help us recruit and retain the great engineering talent in Oregon, so we can stay ahead of the curve and continue to keep our customers safe.”

One of Carbon Black’s early hires from the Portland area included Param Singh, director of the company’s Threat Analysis Unit (TAU), who will continue building out a team of threat researchers in the Hillsboro office. Singh’s efforts will focus on staying on top of the latest threats and attack techniques and keeping Carbon Black customers safe. The office will also house a team of endpoint-software engineers, who will be dedicated to frequently adapting Carbon Black’s solutions to better ensure cutting-edge endpoint protection.

The new office is located in downtown Hillsboro and is already home to 20 employees, which include a mix of endpoint-software engineers, tech support, product owners, and threat researchers.
