VMware Introduces 4-Way Virtual SMP

4-Way VMware Virtual SMP Scales VMware Virtual Infrastructure to Multi-core Processors, Opening the Door to Fully Virtualized Data Centers

SAN DIEGO, October 27, 2004 —At VMworld 2004, VMware, Inc., the global leader in virtual infrastructure software for industry-standard systems, today announced 4-Way VMware Virtual SMP (symmetric multiprocessing). With the power of up to four physical processors available to each virtual machine, VMware customers will be able to extend the benefits of virtual infrastructure to the most demanding enterprise workloads. VMware continues to be the only provider of x86 virtualization platforms to support Virtual SMP.

"Our customers enthusiastically adopted our 2-Way Virtual SMP feature to run applications requiring multiple processors in VMware ESX Server virtual machines," said Ed Bugnion, CTO at VMware. "As multi-core processors become standard, scalable Virtual SMP will become an essential part of our customers' virtualization strategy. We're responding by offering 4-Way Virtual SMP so that our customers can meet their goals of standardizing on virtual infrastructure in 2005."

4-Way VMware Virtual SMP follows VMware's first delivery of 2-Way VMware Virtual SMP in 2003. 4-Way VMware Virtual SMP will enable a single virtual machine to span four processors, making virtual machines ideal for all applications, even the most resource-intensive applications like large enterprise databases, ERP applications and Microsoft Exchange. With the introduction of 4-Way VMware Virtual SMP, the powerful benefits of VMware ESX Server virtual machines will be available to every data center server, including the ones previously reserved for the largest applications.

Pricing and Availability

4-Way VMware Virtual SMP is currently in testing. The new product will be available in the second half of 2005 and will be an add-on product to VMware ESX Server. Pricing will be announced at the time of availability.
