PALO ALTO, Calif. – April 7, 2022 – VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW) today unveiled <a href="https://www.vmware.com/explore.html?src=WWW_us_VMW_UgnCFpyH1PfNWQ7uYMAv&int_cid=7012H000001lIFW">VMware Explore</a>, the global multi-cloud industry event. VMware Explore is an evolution of the company’s flagship conference, VMworld, and will be inclusive of more technologies, and ecosystem and developer communities that help shape the multi-cloud universe. VMware Explore US will be held August 29 – September 1, 2022 at Moscone Center in San Francisco. Later this year, VMware Explore Europe will be held November 7–10, 2022 at the Fira Gran Via in Barcelona, Spain. Additional VMware Explore regional events are scheduled for Brazil (October 19-20), China (November 17-18), Japan (November 15-16), and Singapore (November 15-16).

After two years of virtual events, VMware Explore attendees will experience a refreshed customer event and an opportunity to network with new and old friends and colleagues. Attendees can expect feature-rich technical content – both in-person and on-demand – along with more business-oriented sessions, customer success stories, community corners, and a renewed attendee experience. Attendees will learn about multi-cloud and edge architectures from the perspective of VMware product experts and industry thought leaders, as well as how to streamline developer experiences and DevOps practices across applications. As NASA’s mission team watched on from 396 million kilometers away, the Rover deployed its painstakingly designed drilling apparatus into a promising rock.

But when the bore was examined, it was empty. The rock sample had disintegrated into dust.

At VMworld 2021, I had the pleasure of talking to the inspiring <a href="https://mars.nasa.gov/people/profile/index.cfm?id=23121" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dr. Moogega Cooper</a>, the lead of planetary protection for the Mars 2020 Mission.  Her take on what it means to fail is one worth remembering.

<a></a>The NASA team had tested its drilling system hundreds of times on Earth and thought they knew every single scenario.

<a></a>“The team took it well,” Dr. Cooper said.

<a></a>Dr. Cooper told me that after the initial disappointment, the mission team quickly refocused and treated the incident as an opportunity to gain new insight.<a></a> We learn so much from failure, she says. Failure allows us to grow, driving deeper understanding and, ultimately, innovation.

I’d add that a shared experience of failure also helps bond teams together, making them stronger and more capable.

Hardening Under Pressure

During an enlightening conversation, Dr. Cooper and I also discussed another crucial aspect of strong teams:  the ability to give and receive frank, fearless feedback.

<a></a>As the lead planetary protection engineer (surely one of the best job titles on Earth), she’s responsible for ensuring that missions we send to Mars don’t contaminate the environment with Earth-borne life and strictly controls what comes back from Mars, too.

<a></a>It’s a high-stakes mission in an environment that doesn’t forgive mistakes. The mission team’s work must therefore be close to perfect.

Achieving this means creating a culture of unflinching feedback, Dr. Cooper said. It means expecting that every time you propose an idea, your peers will stress-test it from every angle, looking for flaws and weaknesses.

<a></a>NASA’s mission team thrives in this culture of critical feedback by staying focused on a common goal.

<a></a>“That common goal may vary from company to company, but it's essentially something to the flavor of mission success,” she said.<a></a> “And so, if somebody is coming at you with a critical opinion, you have to remind yourself that we all want to get this spacecraft to the launch pad and operating successfully.<a></a> It takes a little bit of putting your ego to the side and really focusing on that goal.”

The best way for anyone to succeed, Dr. Cooper said, is to surround yourself with people who have your best interests at heart. This doesn’t mean telling you that you’re right all the time. But instead, telling you what you need to hear.

One of the most encouraging aspects of my discussion with Dr. Cooper was understanding more about the diverse mission team behind the Mars expedition.

<a></a>The lack of diversity in many STEM sectors has been a focus of many people, including myself, for many years. So, I celebrate a STEM team at the absolute pinnacle of its field leading by example.

<a></a>When I was at university studying electrical engineering, just six of my 130 classmates were women. While large, sustained efforts are still needed to get more women into STEM, we’re seeing plenty of bright spots.

In India, for example, 45% of STEM graduates are now women. But, as Dr. Cooper said, having a seat at the table is one thing. Having a voice is something else entirely.

“As we were working towards this mission, I was so pleasantly surprised when I would look around the room and there were many women in positions of power,” she said. “That’s an element that inspires and changes. When you can commit to having people in leadership positions, that’s when you can see real changes are going to be made.”

The Value of Perseverance

While Martian rocks may seem a long way from our everyday lives, missions like Perseverance are almost certain to have a big impact on tech you and I use every day. GPS, mobile phone cameras, CAT scans and even the humble computer mouse all have their origin in our efforts to better understand the cosmos.

As we celebrate International Space Week, it’s important to acknowledge an amazing year in space exploration. I, for one, am excited to see what trickles out of today’s efforts to explore other planets.

<a></a>And it’s worth mentioning that exactly one month after Perseverance failed in its first attempt to extract and store a Martian rock sample, it tried again. This time, the process worked beautifully. Perseverance, indeed.

Duncan Hewett is the senior vice president and general manager for VMware’s business in Asia Pacific &amp; Japan. In this role, Hewett is responsible for VMware’s sales, business strategy and services across the region. He is adept in executing go-to-market strategy across a multi-product and multi-cloud platform supporting digital transformation of enterprises and believes that a customer centric behavior is critical for an organization’s growth. &nbsp; Prior to this, Hewett was leading IBM’s Software business for Asia Pacific region. In his 29 year long career, he has held several senior leadership roles across IBM’s business units, including Enterprise Sales, Acquisition Integration, Subscription &amp; Support and Sales Operations. Duncan joined IBM’s software business through the acquisition of Lotus where he was the general manager responsible for all sales, marketing and services in Australia/New Zealand. &nbsp; Hewett graduated from the University of Sydney with a bachelor’s degree in engineering.

In their role as independent auditor, IDC was also commissioned by VMware to act as the preliminary judge and recommendation organization to the 2021 VMware Customer Excellence Award Program.

The awards committee looked at the toughest challenges organizations faced over the past year. From suddenly remote workforces to changing customer demands and the global health crisis, these eight organizations made the impossible “possible” in these categories:

And, among so many other demands on their business, the company’s cloud, apps, data intelligence and IoT innovations were critical for helping distribute lifesaving COVID-19 vaccines to communities across the world.

Digital Business Transformation of the Year: Pirelli

Pirelli manufactures tires for premium and prestige vehicle brands. The company collaborates with these car manufacturers to design tires for specific models and versions. Working collaboratively enables Pirelli to gain deeper insight into near- and long-term customer needs, delivering greater manufacturing agility and faster time to market. Thanks to this business model, more than 80% of customers fitting Pirelli tires as original equipment choose Pirelli tires in the replacement market.   

Highly digitized processes in Pirelli’s manufacturing plants require intensive data management. To modernize its IT infrastructure, Pirelli needed a multi-cloud strategy to integrate its private cloud with a public cloud solution. Since VMware helped virtualize nearly 100% of the company’s on-premises private cloud, the migration to a public cloud solution using VMware Cloud on Amazon AWS was a logical digital foundation to provide Pirelli with full platform independence. Using VMware technology to move virtual machines from the private to public cloud created an efficient, multi-cloud vendor strategy compatible with all public cloud providers.   

The company’s integrated approach enables Pirelli to transform the way it works with customers in order to minimize costs and improve time to market, agility and team collaboration. The solution is expected to increase the company’s bandwidth at lower total cost of ownership globally.

Social Impact of the Year: IHC New Zealand 

Founded in 1949, IHC New Zealand advocates for the rights, inclusion and welfare of all people with Intellectual disabilities. IHC is the second-largest social housing provider in the country and provides full residential services so that the people we support can live in their communities. IHC also offers vocational training to assist with employment opportunities. 

For years, IHC operated a paper record-keeping system. This process created fragmented sets of resident data, effecting the amount of time staff could devote to residents.  Ultimately, IHC’s team decided they needed digital solutions to modernize their operations. The first step: enabling 3,500 remote staff with mobile devices and cloud-based apps. 

Working with VMware engineers, IHC will soon manage all 2,500 mobile devices with VMware Workspace ONE. Its small-but-mighty team of 25 IT experts deploy apps to users’ chosen devices in a controlled, consistent way. And with managed services provider CCL, the team helps drive usage and feature enhancements.  

Looking forward, IHC is exploring IoT and cloud solutions to advance its mission of enabling people with intellectual disabilities to lead fuller, barrier-free lives. 

Improved Customer Experience: IndusInd Bank Ltd 

Headquartered in Mumbai, IndusInd Bank has more than 1,500 branches across India, with offices in London, Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Established in 1994, the bank opened with traditional banking services. But as competition intensified, the company pioneered customer-centric financial service innovations that helped customers transition to online banking and other digital experiences.  

But to create a robust platform for its evolving digital capabilities, IndusInd needed a pathway to the cloud. IndusInd Bank partnered with VMware to accelerate innovation and deliver new customer experiences. Now, the bank can build and run apps on any cloud.  

IndusInd’s flexible, multi-cloud infrastructure delivers a constellation of customer-centric apps and services. One of those is IndusAssist on Amazon Alexa. This innovative service lets customers check account balances, transfer funds and pay credit card bills simply by talking to Alexa. Another example is Video Branch. Using mobile devices, customers can connect with bank representatives and complete a full range of tasks from home—or anywhere in the world.  

Finally, IndusInd’s digital foundation gives its team the tools and resources they need to rapidly respond to business disruptions and adapt to rapidly changing markets. 

For example, “Compared to before the pandemic and now, 70-80% of our acquisitions are via digital channel.  That’s a big jump; a very high portion of customers are using digital channels. Payment has become contactless during the time that the pandemic came into our lives,” said Biwasbrata Chakravorty, head of information technology, IndusInd Bank.

Digital Transformation: Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA)

CBA’s goal is to move 95% of its IT workload to the public cloud by 2025, as a way to simplify CBA’s technology estate and ensure applications remain highly resilient and highly available. The bank’s migration to public cloud ensures greater digital resilience throughout its IT infrastructure by consolidating disparate systems and processes and adopting automation for an improved service. In working closely with AWS, VMware helped to ensure success in implementing capabilities for CBA’s renewed operating infrastructure. 

Now with a more standardized, resilient architecture, the bank is able to use a scalable and agile platform, where technology teams can deliver the best digital experiences to customers. It will return benefits to CBA in operational efficiencies, enabling business agility, growth and market differentiation.

This ultimately translates into benefits CBA’s customers, who will be able to access their money 24/7 and pay for critical services. Additionally, with the improvements in CBA’s technology infrastructure, it can now provide a key payment platform that forms a large part of Australia’s liquidity for customers receiving income support, disability payments, veterans’ pensions and salaries for government employees.

VMware Cloud with Tanzu services is a new portfolio of managed Kubernetes services that will be available at no additional charge as part of VMware Cloud on AWS. Tanzu services will make app modernization with Kubernetes faster, easier and less expensive on VMware Cloud than alternative managed Kubernetes solutions. IT admins will be able to use the VMware vCenter interface to unify VM and container management on a common platform and provision Kubernetes clusters within minutes. Platform operators or SREs will be able to manage Kubernetes clusters consistently across clouds using Tanzu services as a multi-cloud Kubernetes management plane.

VMware Cloud Is Simpler and Safer for Enterprise Apps

VMware Cloud makes running enterprise vSphere apps in any cloud environment simpler and safer. Research shows VMware Cloud customers can achieve 300% faster Kubernetes deployment(1), 46% faster cloud migration(2), and 57% reduction in TCO(2).

VMware Cloud Customers Share Their Stories

“Carrefour is working with Google Cloud and VMware to accelerate the company's digital-first mission by responding to business opportunities faster while reducing our IT operations cost and environmental footprint," said Damien Cazenave, chief technology officer and chief information officer, Carrefour France. "With Google Cloud VMware Engine, we were able to quickly and seamlessly move our VMware workloads to Google Cloud in less time than originally expected. We now have the opportunity to modernize our IT infrastructure through better automation and resilience on Google Cloud.”

“Working with VMware and Deloitte, Sterling National Bank was able to exit two data centers and migrate to VMware Cloud on AWS within a year,” adds Vesko Pehlivanov, senior managing director, solution strategy and architecture, Sterling National Bank. “Even with the limitations posed by the pandemic, our migration was so seamless that our users and application owners were unaware any changes took place. There was no downtime at all. The strong alliance between Sterling, VMware, and Deloitte helped us move faster and more effectively than we could have done alone.”

“Tower Health has a large investment in on-premises VMware Cloud infrastructure that works well for our business. “By migrating our VMware environment to Azure VMware Solution, we estimate that we are realizing six figures in hardware savings, averting more than five months of processing and supply chain delays, and gaining greater agility to support our spike in virtual desktop as a result of the ongoing pandemic,” said Mari Lovo, director of cloud infrastructure services, University of Miami. “Taking advantage of Microsoft’s Azure Hybrid Benefit allows the University of Miami to use its existing on-premises Windows Server licenses for VMs in its Azure VMware Solution environment, at no additional cost.”

VMware Frees Access to VMware Tanzu Platform with New VMware Tanzu Community Edition, Allowing Customers to Run and Manage Kubernetes-Based Containerized Apps at No Cost in Multi-Cloud Environments

PALO ALTO, Calif. -- VMworld 2021 -- As organizations come to grips with the reality of a permanent digital-first world, the pressure to digitize and modernize operations remains high. Users can leverage Tanzu Mission Control Starter to get global visibility and policy control over Kubernetes clusters— whether on-premises or in any public clouds. Users can combine Tanzu Mission Control Starter with Tanzu Community Edition to get started on running and managing Kubernetes-based containerized apps at no cost. And for those not currently using Tanzu but running Kubernetes with other providers (such as AKS, GKE, EKS), those existing clusters can be attached to Tanzu Mission Control Starter to centrally manage them.

AI Development Simplified Through VMware vSphere with Tanzu and NVIDIA AI Enterprise

In March 2021, VMware and NVIDIA announced an end-to-end AI-ready enterprise platform that’s easy to deploy and operate. This joint platform includes the NVIDIA AI Enterprise software suite, which has been certified, optimized and supported by NVIDIA for VMware vSphere. VMware is announcing that Tanzu Kubernetes Grid Service, included in VMware vSphere with Tanzu, is now integrated with NVIDIA AI Enterprise, enabling customers to automate the delivery of containerized workloads, and proactively manage apps in production.

Customers can now trial their AI projects on NVIDIA AI Enterprise with vSphere with Tanzu, which lets IT operations teams use their existing vSphere environment to deliver Kubernetes clusters to AI developer teams at a rapid pace, while still enabling enterprise-class governance, reliability and security. This allows enterprises to avoid AI silos and simplify management by leveraging virtualization to fold AI developments into existing enterprise infrastructure, accelerating AI adoption in the enterprise.

VMware Tanzu Kubernetes Grid Now Supports NVIDIA GPUs in Amazon Web Services and Azure

As part of VMware’s dedication to providing an enterprise-class, multi-cloud Kubernetes distribution, VMware is delivering one of the most requested VMware Tanzu Kubernetes Grid features of all time—NVIDIA GPU support for Tanzu Kubernetes Grid, supported in VMware vSphere, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and Azure environments.

With Tanzu Kubernetes Grid 1.4, VMware is announcing NVIDIA GPU support for Tanzu Kubernetes Grid on AWS and Azure environments2. Cluster API, the upstream technology we use for cluster lifecycle management supports GPU instance types for AWS and Azure. Developers can now create and manage the lifecycle of GPU-enabled clusters in Tanzu Kubernetes Grid for AWS and Azure.

Enabling Partners’ Developer-Ready Clouds Powered by VMware Tanzu

VMware is now bringing more self-service and DevSecOps capabilities, including VMware Tanzu, to cloud provider partners. With VMware, partners can offer customers fully managed developer-ready clouds on prem, as hosted private clouds, or in VMware Cloud on AWS. The availability of VMware Tanzu across all these environments enables partners’ customers to quickly build and test cloud-native apps leveraging a managed Kubernetes service. With VMware App Launchpad delivered through VMware Cloud Director, for example, customers can access the building blocks they need to develop their modern cloud-native apps and use this same platform to then deploy their custom apps to production.
