New Forrester Consulting Study Provides Insights Into Projected Value of AVS
VMware and Microsoft have collaborated to deliver Azure VMware Solution, a first party service from Microsoft that enables customers to seamlessly extend or completely migrate their existing on-premises VMware applications to Azure without the cost, effort or risk of re-architecting applications or retooling operations. Azure VMware Solution is now available in 17 Azure regions globally. Microsoft Corporate Vice President Eric Lockard provided a great summary of all of the new innovations and enhancements that have been delivered in Azure VMware Solution over the course of 2021.
Recently, Microsoft commissioned Forrester Consulting to conduct a New Technology Projected Total Economic Impact™ (TEI) study and examine the potential return on investment (ROI) enterprises may realize by deploying Azure VMware Solution. To better understand the benefits, costs, and risks associated with this investment, Forrester interviewed four decision-makers with experience using Azure VMware Solution and aggregated the interviewees’ experiences and combined the results into a single composite organization. Overall, the study showed the composite organization had a projected return on investment (ROI) of 125% to 274%, and projected net present value (NPV) of $3.28M to $7.22M.

University of Miami Gains Flexibility and DR Resiliency with Azure VMware Solution
Home to one of the leading oceanographic institutions in the nation, including two U.S. Department of Commerce National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) research laboratories, the University of Miami is well aware of the risks inherent to operating in a region known for hurricanes. To fortify its disaster recovery (DR) strategies, the university’s IT team turned to Microsoft Azure for a cloud-based approach to DR for key systems. As the University’s cloud strategy evolved, Azure VMware Solution was launched, and the service presented an opportunity to achieve demonstrable financial benefits for moving VMware vSphere workloads to the cloud.
“By migrating our VMware environment to Azure VMware Solution, we estimate that we are realizing six figures in hardware savings, averting more than five months of processing and supply chain delays, and gaining greater agility to support our spike in virtual desktop as a result of the ongoing pandemic,” said Mari Lovo, director of cloud infrastructure services, University of Miami. “Taking advantage of Microsoft’s Azure Hybrid Benefit allows the University of Miami to use its existing on-premises Windows Server licenses for VMs in its Azure VMware Solution environment, at no additional cost.”
