VMware Primes Its Flagship Virtual Computing Desktop Product for Greater Use Throughout the Enterprise

With New Support for Operating System Migration and Microsoft Designed for Windows Certification, VMware Workstation 3.2 Targets Both Technical and General Business Users

PALO ALTO, Calif., September 16, 2002— VMware, Inc., the leading provider of virtual computing software for industry-standard computers, today announced the general availability of VMware Workstation 3.2, the latest release of its flagship desktop software product. With numerous new features and performance enhancements, this latest release readies VMware Workstation for greater use throughout the enterprise.

VMware Workstation enables users to run multiple operating environments on a single PC or laptop. As a result, users can consolidate and manage their computing environments on fewer computers. Businesses throughout the globe use VMware desktop and server products in a variety of settings, including server consolidation, high availability, software development and testing, operating system migration, help desk support, sales demonstrations, education and training.

Reducing the Costs of Operating System Migration and Application Compatibility

Numerous organizations are using VMware Workstation to run legacy applications in virtual machines on PCs equipped with newer operating systems. The new release includes an "administrative lockout" feature which provides global password protection on a number of administrative functions—a feature that enables businesses to serve general users. VMware Workstation 3.2 also comes with improved networking capabilities and CPU performance enhancements—key improvements for enterprise-wide use.

Fleet Bank has deployed VMware Workstation to run a DOS-based teller application in a Windows 2000 environment at more than 200 branches that were acquired through an acquisition. The deployment enabled Fleet to significantly reduce the costs typically associated with large acquisitions, while extending the life of its IT investments.

"VMware Workstation has enabled us to keep a tried-and-true application in use throughout the organization, while avoiding the substantial cost of replacing hardware and software," said Mark Johnson, senior systems analyst at Fleet Bank. "There's no doubt that this is one of the best ways to continue using legacy PC-based software within new Windows operating systems."

Designed for Windows Certification

Building on its ongoing relationship with Microsoft Corporation, VMware also announced that VMware Workstation 3.2 has met the requirements for the Microsoft Designed for Windows Logo Program. This logo assures enterprise users that VMware Workstation has full functionality on the Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Windows XP operating systems and is designed to take advantages of new features in Windows XP.

"Microsoft is pleased to award the Designed for Windows logo to VMware," said Rogers Weed, vice president of the Windows group at Microsoft. "By meeting the quality standards of the Designed for Windows Logo Program, customers are guaranteed to have a rich experience when using VMware Workstation with Windows XP."

Pricing and Availability

VMware Workstation 3.2 is available today. The electronic software distribution of VMware Workstation 3.2 is available for $299 via the VMware Store at http://www.vmware.com/vmwarestore/; the boxed version is available for $329.
