PALO ALTO, Calif., September 4, 2009— VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW), the global leader in business infrastructure virtualization, today announced the conclusion of its sixth annual VMworld conference, which was held from Aug. 31 through Sept. 3 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. VMworld 2009 attracted a strong turnout of more than 12,500 customers, partners, press and analysts, and 200+ sponsors and exhibitors—including Platinum sponsors Cisco, Dell, EMC, HP, IBM, Intel, NetApp, Symantec and Wyse—signifying the continued significance of virtualization to the IT industry. The company also announced that VMworld will return to the Moscone Center Aug. 30 to Sept. 2, 2010, and that VMworld Europe will be held in Copenhagen, Denmark, Oct. 12-14, 2010.

Underscoring the conference theme, “Hello Freedom,” VMworld 2009 featured more than 300 presentations and breakout sessions from companies and customers driving innovation in the virtualization industry, focusing on the liberating and transformative effects of virtualization on nearly every aspect of datacenter, desktop and cloud computing. VMware President and Chief Executive Officer Paul Maritz kicked off the event on Tuesday, focusing his keynote on the importance of reducing datacenter management complexities and highlighting the company’s continued investments in cloud computing. On Wednesday, Dr. Stephen Herrod, VMware’s chief technology officer and senior vice president of R&D, discussed the innovations VMware continues to drive in virtualizing desktops and mobile devices.

“At a time when many events have seen extreme drops in attendance, we are very pleased at the success we’ve seen this year at VMworld,” said Claire Darling, senior director, Corporate Marketing, VMware. “We’re excited that VMworld remains a priority for customers, partners and prospects, as VMware and virtualization continue to be at the forefront of innovation that helps drive their businesses through IT.”

The “Hello Freedom” theme highlights the ability of virtualization to empower IT professionals to rid themselves of the technical limitations of conventional computing, and recognizes the resourceful, creative and forward-thinking IT professionals and developers who leverage virtualization to turn possibilities into reality and potential into impact. Thousands of VMware customers worldwide are transforming their organizations by saying “goodbye” to the inflexible and inefficient traditional approach to computing and saying “hello” to a future of infinite possibilities powered by virtualization. Key highlights and announcements made during the event include:

  • VMware announced the VMware vCenter™ Product Family, ushering in a new era of IT management to drive business agility; VMware Go™, a new service that will make virtualization even easier for first-time users; VMware vCloud™ Express, which will deliver on-demand, pay-as-you-go infrastructure as a service; and accelerated customer momentum for VMware View™.
  • VMware and partners announced new joint solutions and initiatives, including a new integrated solution with HP called Insight Control for VMware vCenter™ Server that will help customers simplify management of mixed physical and virtual datacenters; new cloud services based on VMware technology from the world’s leading service providers; and new licensing agreements with Dell, Intel and Lenovo.

  • The conference’s first Technology Exchange Developer Day was held on Monday, attended by nearly 300 developers and featuring VMware Chief Operating Officer Tod Nielsen as the keynote speaker. The industry’s leading software developers and engineers also presented the latest technologies for building robust solutions on the VMware vSphere™ 4 platform.

  • VMworld 2009 featured three datacenters to showcase how customers can integrate different types of infrastructure components with VMware vSphere 4 to satisfy the demands of small, medium and large business. The small datacenter, which had the capacity to serve up 960 virtual machines, was featured in the VMware booth where it provided services for all VMware products being demonstrated. The medium and large datacenters, which powered all the VMware labs, had the capacity to serve up 7,488 and 37,248 virtual machines, respectively.
