U.S. Government Agencies Embrace Desktop Virtualization with VMware View to Accelerate Their Mission

VMware provides federal agencies with the tools needed to drive cloud computing and telework mandates while containing IT costs

DISA CUSTOMER & INDUSTRY FORUM, Baltimore, Md., Aug. 17, 2011, – VMware, Inc.(NYSE: VMW), the global leader in virtualization and cloud infrastructure, today announced growing momentum for desktop virtualization in U.S. Federal agencies with VMware View™.With nearly all federal agencies working towards deploying secure mobile and cloud computing solutions, VMware View enables personnel to securely access their desktops and applications at any time from a variety of devices, such as government-furnished PCs or laptops, personal computers, thin clients, and tablet computers.

The dynamic nature of the federal workforce – including the military – involves field-based, office-based, remote, deployed, and contractor personnel. This mix of environments, devices and worker roles present challenges for desktop management. VMware View, the industry’s leading desktop virtualization solution, can empower federal IT to manage desktops as a cloud-based service. With VMware View agencies can quickly provision, deploy, secure and protect sensitive data, by centrally storing desktop images and data on servers behind agency firewalls.  This enhanced security helps to eliminate the risk of data breaches due to laptop theft or data loss – a huge benefit for federal agencies that manage and maintain such confidential data.

The Department of Veterans Affairs Acquisition Academy

Tasked with training and supporting America’s veterans, the VA Acquisition Academy (VAAA) recently expanded their state-of-the-art training facility to provide instructors with new training tools, and extended their training curriculum beyond physical classrooms.  VMware partnered with FedStore Corporation, a VMware Professional Solutions provider, to build a comprehensive desktop solution that delivers video conferencing, collaborative classrooms, web-based training and custom designed instructor lecterns, enabling students and instructors to have fast and immediate access to all their materials throughout the course. The facility supports more than 370 students, 12 classrooms, 13 breakout rooms, and three distance learning labs, bringing the training opportunities offered by the VAAA to thousands of America’s veterans.

An Agency of the U.S. Department of Defense

A global rapid response force that deals with threats ranging from hurricanes to terrorist attacks, this U.S. Federal Defense Agency is using VMware View to provide fast, reliable access to desktops for emergency responders in mission critical environments. Virtual desktops based on VMware View can be deployed rapidly in response to disaster-generated needs and provide personnel with system-wide access to a common set of mission critical applications. Benefits of desktop virtualization extend beyond personnel; IT administrators now have access to simplified system management, the ability to quickly deploy applications, and can now eliminate the need for client hardware management with a zero client environment.

Supporting Quotes

"Our goal in working with the VAAA was to optimize IT training dollars to do more with less. In working with VMware, along with other key partners, we were able to provide an integrated server and desktop virtualization solution that fulfilled the VAAA’s needs for a complete training experience, all within the time and budget scope allocated for the project.”
—Skip Trahern, President, FedStore Corporation

“VMware View enables IT to centralize software management, reduce hardware support and speed application deployment, so that wherever a government employee logs in to the system around the world, he or she gains fast, secure access to a common set of critical resources. Our users can be in one place, then fly to a disaster location and log in to the same environment seamlessly, which is important to data maintenance and integrity.”
— Devin Henderson, Project Systems Architect supporting a U.S. Federal Defense Agency

VMware’s End User Computing

More than ever, enterprises and public agencies are dealing with two fundamental client computing pain points – providing secure access to an increasingly mobile workforce; and managing the burgeoning diversity of data, applications and devices needed to run its business. These challenges result from the transformative nature of cloud computing and the emerging post-PC era.

In this environment, a new way to work is required. The growing VMware End-User Computing portfolio seeks to free people and IT organizations from more than two decades of complex, device-centric computing and deliver a more user-centric, consumer cloud experience for the enterprise. This approach to personal computing will enable organizations to leverage public cloud resources while extending existing security models and providing access to applications and data from any device, where and when people need it.
