VMware Introduces the Industry's First Open Virtual Infrastructure Platform with the VMware SDK

BMC Software, Computer Associates, Enigmatec Corporation, HP, IBM, MetiLinx, PlateSpin, Platform Computing and Surgient Among the First to Integrate Their Management and Utility Computing Solutions into the VMware Virtual Infrastructure

PALO ALTO, Calif., November 10, 2003- VMware, Inc., the global leader in virtual infrastructure software for industry-standard systems, today announced the VMware Software Development Kit (SDK), which provides an open virtual infrastructure platform for VMware's software partners to build their own virtual solutions and integrate their management and utility computing solutions into the VMware virtual infrastructure.

BMC Software, Computer Associates eTrust, Computer Associates Unicenter, Enigmatec Corporation, HP OpenView, HP UDC (Utility Data Center), IBM Director, IBM Tivoli Software, MetiLinx, PlateSpin, Platform Computing and Surgient will be among the first to integrate their management and utility computing solutions into the VMware virtual infrastructure. These integration efforts cement the VMware virtual infrastructure as a critical technology for the next generation data center.

Partner solutions built on the VMware SDK provide customers with an unparalleled flexibility to manage resources across a distributed industry-standard environment. With the resource controls of VMware VirtualCenter and VMware ESX Server, resources can be dynamically added to or removed from running Microsoft Windows and Linux systems. With the programmatic interfaces to VMware's groundbreaking new VMotion technology, partners can create an integrated solution that maximizes the management and automation benefits of their software, while leveraging the instant migration benefits of VMotion. Customers can then use their management interface of choice to dynamically remap running virtual machines and their applications across physically separate servers with no service interruption, and with full transaction integrity.

The VMware SDK incorporates a Web services interface that uses the SOAP and WSDL standards so that developers can program in their choice of environments, such as Java or Visual Studio .NET. The VMware SDK provides a full set of interfaces for building upon and integrating VMware ESX Server and VMware VirtualCenter management capabilities into complementary software solutions. Customers will be able to provision and manage virtual machines side-by-side with physical machines, seamlessly managing each from a single point of control.

Availability

The VMware SDK will be generally available in the first half of 2004.
