VMware Workstation Used Throughout Rational User Conference 2002

Featured in Rational Solution Center, Hands-On Workshops and Conference Sessions

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. and PALO ALTO, Calif., August 19, 2002 — VMware, Inc., the leading provider of virtual computing software for industry-standard computers, today announced that VMware Workstation is being featured in the Rational Solution Center, Hands-On Workshops and Conference Sessions at the Rational User Conference 2002. The conference is being held at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Hotels in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., August 19-22, 2002.

VMware Workstation enables multiple operating systems to run in secure, transportable, high-performance virtual machines. Virtual machines run concurrently and with full isolation on a single physical computer. With VMware Workstation, Rational is able to build, test and demo its software with less hardware and spend less time configuring hardware, installing software, rebooting and reconfiguring systems.

In the Rational Solution Center, VMware Workstation is installed on demonstration systems, each running multiple virtual machines, enabling the systems to run multiple demonstrations of Rational products, including Rational TestManager, Rational XDE Professional: Java Platform Edition and Rational XDE Professional: Microsoft .NET Edition.

In the Hands-On Workshops, Rational is holding three different morning and afternoon workshops on 30 systems. Each system is running VMware Workstation, making it possible for instructors to clear the systems from the previous workshops and set up for the next workshop in the time it takes to power the virtual machines off and on again.

"With VMware Workstation, we can build, test and tweak the images we need ahead of time, and once we're on-site, it's simple to switch between workshops," said Bill Rabkin, senior technical evangelist at Rational Software. "We've been doing workshops on Rational Suite at the Rational User Conference for the last four years. With the introduction earlier this year of Rational XDE, we now need to switch among three different workshop configurations. VMware Workstation lets us do that quickly and easily."

Two conference sessions in the Automated Testing track are featuring VMware Workstation. In session AT16, "Using Rational PurifyPlus and VMware Virtual Machines in the Development of the Quality Engineering Process," Daniel Kerns, chief technology officer of Sand Point Engineering, is discussing configuration testing using VMware virtual machines and Rational PurifyPlus to expand the resources available to software and quality engineers. In session AT27, "Automated Configuration Testing with Virtual Machine Technology," VMware co-founder Scott Devine is examining using VMware virtual machines with Rational TestManager to simplify the complexity of configuration testing, focusing on the ability of one physical machine to run many configurations and the automation of installation and setup.
