VMware MeConomy 2014: Millennials Leading the Charge on Workplace Mobility

VMware MeConomy 2014: Millennials Leading the Charge on Workplace Mobility

VMware MeConomy 2014 survey results signal a need for companies to adjust their IT policy to cater to the demands of an increasingly mobile workforce

Singapore, 16 April 2014 — In a study released today by VMware on the attitudes and preferences of modern employees in an increasingly mobile world, more than eight out of 10 millennials 1 in Singapore said they work outside the office, with 92 percent claiming they work on their personal device when they travel to and from work.

The study also revealed that that 64% of working adults in Singapore felt that their home or home office would be the perfect place to work.

The survey results were part of the VMware MeConomy 2014 study, which sought to understand the attitudes and preferences of the modern employee in an increasingly mobile world. The survey included over 150 respondents from Singapore, of which 75 were millennials.

“Millennials are leading the charge when it comes to working outside the office or on-the-go. As the profile of the average worker shifts from a baby boomer to a millennial, Singapore companies should look to adapt to the changing expectations of the workforce, and enable businesses to function at the speed of life,” said Leslie Ong, Country Manager, VMware Singapore.

Increasing demand for HR and IT to support work from outside the office
Ong added, “At VMware, we believe that flexible IT arrangements and the ability to work from anywhere influences how employees feel about work. Almost half of those surveyed in Singapore said access to their work device and network allows them to be flexible with family and personal appointments. We also found that Singapore employees feel their ideal workplace is their home or home office, followed by their company office and a local cafe.”

This expectation that they can and should work from anywhere has placed additional pressure on HR and IT to cater to changing demands and technology needs. Employees surveyed expect their company to support mobile working by providing:

  • A comprehensive and accepted flexible working policy (56%)
  • Equipment and hardware that allow them to work everywhere (54%)
  • Tools that enable access to applications they need on their own devices (48%).

For IT support, employees surveyed were eager to have:

  • Faster network access (53%)
  • Equipment that works (53%)
  • Virtual desktops that they can access from any device (42%)

VMware helps companies deliver desktop and application virtualization

To help IT better support mobile workers, VMware recently announced VMware Horizon™ 6, an updated portfolio of end-user computing solutions designed to further simplify the use and management of virtual desktops and applications through a single platform and is expected to be generally available in Q2 2014.

VMware Horizon 6 will enable a unified workspace that allows IT to efficiently deliver, protect and manage Windows desktops and applications to employees across their virtual, physical and personal devices.

VMware Horizon 6 will not only enable IT to meet the demands of the mobile workforce, it will also help IT contain costs and ensures that employees can work anytime, anywhere, on any device.
