Linux Magazine Names VMware a Top Company to Watch in 2007

PALO ALTO, Calif., January 24, 2007— VMware, Inc., the global leader in software for industry-standard virtualized desktops and servers, today announced that Linux Magazine named VMware to its 20 Companies to Watch in 2007 list.

The Linux Magazine 20 Companies to Watch list features the vendors that are making a significant impact on the next generation of Linux and Open Source adoption. Linux Magazine selects companies that have the ability to spur Open Source adoption in all facets of IT, are technology and service innovators and develop practical solutions for the Open Enterprise.

"By providing a clear path for enterprises to integrate virtualization technology, VMware is helping drive the enterprise adoption of Linux," said Bryan Richard, editorial director of Linux Magazine. "The company's willingness to address the technology challenges of virtualization head-on makes VMware one of our 20 companies to watch."

Linux virtualization has been a strong driver of VMware product adoption, with more than 70 percent of VMware customers running Linux server environments using VMware products. Broad and robust Linux support has been a hallmark of VMware products spanning the enterprise data center to the desktop.

VMware has invested in numerous open technology efforts with the Linux community, including introducing the Virtual Machine Interface (VMI) paravirtualization specification, contributing to the paravirt-ops platform-independent paravirtualization API and opening up VMware's Virtual Machine Disk (VMDK) format for all developers to use freely. In addition, VMware has introduced virtual appliances, which have radically improved software packaging, distribution and management. More than 380 virtual appliances, most of which are Linux-based and include appliances from Novell, Red Hat and Ubuntu, can be found on the VMware Virtual Appliance Marketplace at vam.vmware.com.

"This award reflects how broadly customers have adopted VMware products to efficiently and flexibly run and manage enterprise Linux environments," said Dan Chu, vice president of emerging products and markets at VMware. "We are honored to be recognized by Linux Magazine as a leader and innovator in the Linux community."
