VMware Infrastructure 3 Wins InfoWorld Technology of the Year Award
Industry’s Most Robust Virtualization Software Suite Named a Top Technology Impacting IT
PALO ALTO, Calif., January 8, 2007 — VMware, Inc., the global leader in software for industry-standard virtualized desktops and servers, today announced that InfoWorld has given VMware Infrastructure 3 its 2007 Technology of the Year Award for being the best server virtualization solution in the hardware virtualization category. This marks the third consecutive year that InfoWorld has bestowed these top honors on VMware.

VMware Infrastructure 3 is the only third-generation virtualization software suite on the market today. The first generation of virtualization provided simple server partitioning through a hypervisor or hosted architecture. The second generation added management, capacity planning, a physical-to-virtual (P2V) assistant and other tools for consolidating production servers. The third generation, VMware Infrastructure 3, delivers robust systems infrastructure capabilities for entire farms of servers and storage, independent of application and operating system workloads and of the underlying hardware. With VMware Infrastructure 3, VMware ushered in a new era for data centers where industry-standard infrastructure farms can be managed as a shared utility and dynamically allocated to different business units or projects.
Among its powerful features that offer customers more than a hypervisor, VMware Infrastructure 3 offers VMware DRS, which uses VMware VMotion technology to dynamically aggregate hardware resources into logical resource pools and optimally reallocate them, allowing virtual machines to be redistributed when they experience increased loads; VMware High Availability, which eliminates single points of hardware failure by automatically restarting virtual machines, providing high availability without the cost and complexity of failover solutions tied to either operating systems or specific applications; and VMware Consolidated Backup, which simplifies data protection by offloading backup to a centralized server, allowing customers to perform backup at any time.
A recent survey completed by more than 1,800 VMware customers indicates that VMware Infrastructure 3 is gaining momentum and being deployed pervasively as integral components of IT infrastructure strategies:
- 43 percent are currently standardizing on VMware Infrastructure
- 61 percent expect to virtualize more than half of their x86 servers within three years
- 32 percent have already upgraded to VMware Infrastructure 3, and another 45 percent stated that they plan to upgrade by June 2007
