Gannett Chooses VMware and Dell

Company Runs VMware on Dell PowerEdge Servers and Dell/EMC Storage to Help Reduce Cost, Maximize Capacity

Round Rock, Texas, April 26, 2004 — Gannett Media Technologies International (GMTI), an Application Service Provider, has built its new hosting environment on standards-based hardware from Dell and server virtualization software from VMware.

GMTI offers a variety of Internet hosting solutions to the printing and publishing industry. To better serve their customers, GMTI selected Dell as the primary provider of server and storage systems to build a flexible and scalable Internet hosting infrastructure.

Running Microsoft Windows and Linux operating systems, GMTI has installed 90 Dell PowerEdge servers to support its hosting operations. To help reduce cost and consolidate the number of servers from 40 to four running its back-end applications, the company has installed VMware ESX ServerTM virtualization software on Dell PowerEdge 6650 servers. This software allows users to create multiple "virtual machines" on a single physical server, each of which is then able to run a separate operating system and application. The servers are connected to a Dell/EMC storage area network (SAN) providing 30 TB of raw storage capacity to enable VMware VMotion capability, which can dynamically move applications to different physical servers based on business needs.

"Normally we would require a dedicated machine for each of our IT applications, which can be an expensive and difficult environment to manage," said Chris Ruffieux, vice president of technology, GMTI. "With VMware ESX Server virtualization software, we can run 40 virtual machines on just four Dell servers and add on as our business needs grow in the most cost effective way."

GMTI uses Dell OpenManage systems management suite, VMware VirtualCenter management software and VMWare VMotion virtual machine migration technology to fully integrate, manage and support the entire virtualization solution and provide a central point of control for the data center's virtual computing resources. The company will also rely on Dell Services to support the new environment, providing a single point of contact and accountability to GMTI for both the hardware and software elements.

"The primary benefit of working with Dell for our virtualization environment is the peace of mind provided by knowing that Dell has close relationships with VMware and EMC and that the configurations have been tested, certified and fully-supported," said Ruffieux.

"VMware virtualization software on Dell systems helps customers consolidate workloads across distributed server environments, thereby increasing availability and contributing to an IT infrastructure that is more responsive to business needs," said Steve Felice, vice president and general manager of Dell's Corporate Business Group. "These standards-based hardware and software products can help GMTI better use their computing resources, lower their costs and provide their customers with the best service and support."
