VMware Announces New Release of Virtual Computing Server Software for Server Consolidation and Management

VMware ESX Server 1.1 partitions physical servers into multiple virtual servers New release features simpler installation and easier integration with server management tools

PALO ALTO, Calif., January 7, 2002 — VMware, Inc., the leading provider of virtual computing software for industry-standard computers, today announced VMware ESX Server 1.1, the latest release of its advanced virtual computing software for enterprise server consolidation and management. The new release features numerous enhancements including simpler installation, easier integration with server management tools and data availability applications, and improved security.

ESX Server is virtualization software for consolidating and partitioning enterprise servers. Ideally suited for corporate and service provider data centers, ESX Server provides a cost-effective, high-performance, highly scalable virtualization platform. No other solution can ensure complete isolation of multiple servers running together on standard Intel hardware with guaranteed service levels of CPU, memory, and network bandwidth. ESX Server is designed so that businesses can rapidly deploy, easily manage, and remotely control more servers while saving space, management effort, and hardware costs. The results are optimal flexibility and manageability, and much lower total cost of ownership (TCO).

Many businesses are using ESX Server 1.1 for server consolidation projects. PricewaterhouseCoopers is using the product to consolidate servers at 26 sites to one central site in Tampa Florida; the objective of the project is to consolidate from 650 physical servers to 350 or less.

Features in the new release were designed to allow businesses to more quickly install a virtual computing platform that easily integrates with server management tools and data availability solutions such as enterprise backup and clustering. New features include improved installation, additional support for RAID and network controllers, security enhancements, compatibility with remote installation tools, and improved user interface for Web-based management.

"Our server products provide the state-of-the-art for virtual computing on the Intel platform," said Diane Greene, CEO and president of VMware. "For businesses looking for mainframe-class control over their Intel servers, and for those looking for easy integration with server management tools, ESX Server is the right choice."
