VMware Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS) Wins Computerworld’s Horizon Award for being ‘Cutting-Edge’

VMware DRS Dynamically Allocates and Balances Computing Resources

SAN FRANCISCO and PALO ALTO, Calif., August 28, 2006 — VMware, Inc., the global leader in software for industry-standard virtualized desktops and servers, today announced that VMware DRS has received the Computerworld Horizon Award for being cutting-edge.

“The Horizon Awards recognize companies developing innovative, promising technologies which hold the potential to significantly affect enterprises in the near future,” said Don Tennant, editor in chief of Computerworld. “VMware’s DRS was chosen for its ability to dynamically aggregate hardware resources into logical resource pools and optimally allocate them to applications running in virtual machines, minimizing the need for manual intervention. All of the award winners are demonstrating leadership in IT management and innovation in their industry sectors.”

VMware DRS provides IT organizations with a solution for creating a highly flexible and dynamic IT infrastructure where resources can be automatically added or removed from workloads without impacting end user services. Ideal for any environment with shared IT resources, VMware DRS aggregates physically separate server resources into logical resource pools that can be sliced and dynamically parceled out to individual workloads based on a pre-defined business policy.

Instead of provisioning workloads to specific servers, administrators deploy workloads to a DRS pool and give them a share of the pool’s resources; DRS then dynamically adjusts the location of those workloads as necessary to meet their resource policies. Unlike traditional resource management approaches that pin workloads to specific physical systems, VMware DRS uses VMware VMotion technology to automatically and transparently move running workloads between systems to provide a level of runtime flexibility unique to virtual environments.

“We are honored to receive this award from Computerworld. VMware Infrastructure 3 with VMware DRS provides a compelling solution for any business that wants to make server resource management a continuous improvement process,” said Karthik Rau, senior director of infrastructure products and solutions at VMware. “VMware DRS builds upon the unique benefits of virtualization to provide a completely transparent, simple–to–use and automated approach to turn any IT environment into a shared and continuously optimized utility.”

In conjunction with a panel of senior IT executives, Computerworld evaluated more than 200 product submissions that demonstrated innovative technologies in a wide assortment of categories. Finalists were evaluated by an independent panel of CIOs based on a questionnaire that profiled the company and the enterprise IT need the technology or solution addresses.
