VMware Announces Broad Industry Support from Backup Vendors for VMware Consolidated Backup

NEW YORK and PALO ALTO, Calif., September 27, 2006 — At Storage Decisions, VMware, Inc., the global leader in software for industry-standard virtualized desktops and servers, today announced broad industry support for VMware Consolidated Backup, a software product part of VMware Infrastructure 3 Enterprise edition that leverages virtualization technology to enable quick and easy backup and recovery. Leading backup and recovery software providers CA, CommVault, EMC, IBM Tivoli, Symantec and Vizioncore have pledged support for the product to ensure their customers benefit from its robust data protection functionality.

“Virtualization provides groundbreaking new ways to address age-old problems in the areas of system and data protection and recovery,” said Karthik Rau, senior director of infrastructure products and solutions at VMware. “Unlike traditional physical infrastructure, a virtual infrastructure eliminates the hardware dependencies that typically complicate backup and restore operations. Through VMware Consolidated Backup, VMware has created a powerful platform that enables industry-leading backup vendors to capitalize on the benefits of virtualization to provide greater efficiencies to our mutual customers. The broad industry support for VMware Consolidated Backup reaffirms the strategic importance of virtualization to any customer seeking to implement a forward-looking recovery strategy.”

VMware Infrastructure 3, the third generation of the industry-leading infrastructure virtualization software suite, provides a much faster and more reliable vehicle for backing up and recovering servers than physical infrastructure. Building on the benefits of VMware Infrastructure 3, VMware Consolidated Backup simplifies data protection by offloading backup to a centralized server. Offloading backup allows VMware ESX Server, which is also part of VMware Infrastructure 3, to run more virtual machines by reducing its load, and it eliminates hardware dependencies and enables backup to occur safely even during production hours. The backup and recovery benefits customers can realize through VMware Infrastructure 3 include:

  • Faster full-system recovery: VMware Infrastructure 3 eliminates the complexities of bare-metal recovery by installing a virtualization layer between the physical hardware and virtual machines, enabling much faster recovery for virtual machines even on different server hardware
  • Simpler backup: VMware Infrastructure 3 simplifies the backup process by consolidating backups onto fewer proxy servers rather than requiring customers to install a backup agent within each virtual machine
  • Broad partner support: VMware Infrastructure 3 is supported by major backup vendors, which lets customers use their existing backup products to back up VMware virtual machines

“Time-consuming and labor-intensive backup and recovery processes have frustrated customers for years. VMware has taken a major step forward by adding a new product to its VMware Infrastructure 3 software suite, VMware Consolidated Backup,” said Arun Taneja, consulting analyst and founder of Taneja Group. “This breakthrough product eliminates the backup load from production servers while enabling faster recovery of entire virtual machines, helping customers simplify the backup and recovery process.”

Support for VMware Consolidated Backup comes from leading backup vendors that produce many of the backup applications used by customers worldwide.

“In an increasingly complex computing environment, IT organizations need to simplify backup and recovery administration in order to minimize impact on staff and user productivity,” said Frank Jablonski, director of storage management product marketing at CA. “The combination of CA’s BrightStor ARCserve Backup and VMware Consolidated Backup fulfills these goals by centralizing management of backup tasks and moving them off user resources.”

“Customers want reliable data management strategies that do not impact the performance and availability of their systems. CommVault’s unified approach to data management and integration with VMware Consolidated Backup provides users with the ability to centralize backups with low impact to production environments, preserving the intuitive restore process for virtualized clients,” said David West, vice president of marketing and business development at CommVault. “We are pleased to offer VMware Consolidated Backup with Galaxy to help meet our customers’ demanding data management needs.”

“EMC NetWorker customers leveraging VMware Consolidated Backup can further improve their recovery point and recovery time objectives for business critical-applications,” said Mark Sorenson, senior vice president of information management software at EMC. “As NetWorker provides granular backup and recovery of all files within the virtual machines for VMware ESX Server, joint customers can ensure that they receive centralized, automated and accelerated recovery without impacting the performance and availability of their systems.”

“Customers need reliable, high-performance data protection solutions to help ensure the availability of critical business information,” said Don O’Toole, director of market management at IBM Tivoli. “IBM is working with VMware to enable customers to combine its Tivoli Storage Manager family of products with VMware Infrastructure 3 and VMware Consolidated Backup to create backup solutions that meet demanding resilience and data protection requirements.”

“Symantec is committed to providing the best-in-class data protection for virtualized environments,” said Matt Kixmoeller, senior director of product management for NetBackup at Symantec. “Symantec is working closely with VMware to ensure that NetBackup customers will be able to leverage the benefits of VMware Infrastructure 3 for effectively protecting their data with an integrated backup solution using NetBackup and VMware Consolidated Backup.”

“VMware Consolidated Backup complements the enhanced functionality of esxRanger Professional 2.0 to create an integrated, robust, enterprise-ready solution with unprecedented protection of both system and file images,” said David Bieneman, CEO of Vizioncore Inc. “By combining esxRanger Professional 2.0 for image-level backup and restores and the cutting-edge platform of VMware Consolidated Backup to offload backups from the host, customers can implement a powerful backup and restore solution for their virtual environments.”
