Bit9 Enhances Cloud-based Software Reputation Service

Multiple antivirus engine scanning technologies complement industry’s most comprehensive repository of software reputation information

WALTHAM, Mass.—December 31, 2013Bit9, the leader in advanced threat protection for endpoints and servers based on real-time visibility and prevention, today announced that the Bit9 Software Reputation Service (SRS), the world’s most comprehensive repository of software reputation information, now leverages multiple antivirus engine scanning technologies delivered by OPSWAT’s Metascan.

The Bit9 SRS, a cloud-based intelligence database that integrates into the Bit9 Security Platform, provides insight into known-good, known-bad and unproven software, giving IT and security teams actionable intelligence about the software installed within their enterprise. The Bit9 SRS aggregates software and threat-intelligence information from Bit9’s threat research team, the Internet, third-party threat-intelligence feeds and other sources. Software reputation is calculated based on attributes such as age, prevalence, publisher, source, threat research, results of AV scans and more.

The Bit9 SRS, in conjunction with the Bit9 Security Platform, helps security professionals isolate untrusted software and understand the risks of software within their environment. It also enables automated approval of known-good software. This intelligence enables security teams to identify trustworthy, untrusted and malicious software, enabling the creation of customized security policies.

With the integration of OPSWAT’s Metascan technology in the Bit9 SRS, enterprises benefit from the threat-detection capabilities of multiple leading antivirus engines. The results provide additional information for determining if files are malicious, increasing the breadth of attributes used to calculate software reputation.

“The software reputation ratings of the Bit9 SRS are a key element of the advanced threat detection, response and prevention capabilities for endpoints and servers on which our customers rely,” said Allen Lieberman, director of product management for Bit9. “Adding Metascan makes the Bit9 SRS more powerful by enabling simultaneous analysis of files by many antivirus technologies, which, combined with the Bit9 platform, helps enterprises avoid the dangers posed by advanced threats.”
