VMware Powers tyBit Search Engine, Handles 70 Million Search Requests in October

Revolutionary Search Platform Doubling in Traffic Each Month, Relies on VMware Platform for Extreme Scalability, Stability and Performance

PALO ALTO, Calif. – January 27, 2009– VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW), the global leader in virtualization solutions from the desktop to the datacenter, today announced that AIT, Inc., ( www.AIT.com) a leading provider of hosting solutions and IT services, has deployed VMware’s industry-leading management and virtualization suite, VMware Infrastructure 3, as the foundation for AIT’s revolutionary tyBit search engine, ( www.tyBit.com), which is helping to reshape the search engine industry and online advertising.

AIT currently has more than 200,000 domain customers and has twice been named an Inc. 500 company.  AIT successfully diversified its business with the development of tyBit, which has become one of the fastest-growing search platforms in the world.  It received over 70 million search requests in October 2008 and its volume is nearly doubling each quarter.  tyBit is a white-label search engine that Internet service providers, media companies, cable companies and  OEMs use to enter the lucrative market for search advertising.  With over 500 virtual machines (VMs) already running in its hosting environment, AIT didn’t hesitate to build its tyBit search engine on a VMware’s infrastructure from the outset.

“We’ve tried growing our business on hardware and it’s awfully hard,” said Clarence Briggs, chief executive officer, at AIT.  “It’s like trying to scale a four-cylinder car to eight cylinders then 16 and so on.  There are tremendous secondary and tertiary costs, and lots of moving parts that can fail.  We have a massive VMware deployment for our hosting business and it’s proven that it can deliver superior performance and unfailing availability at a fraction of the cost of a hardware-based environment.  And from a manageability perspective, it’s not even close.  Our virtual environment can be managed centrally with a very small staff.  When it was time to build out tyBit, we didn’t consider anything other than a VMware virtualized infrastructure.”

Briggs cited a number of specific capabilities in VMware Infrastructure that led AIT to select the VMware platform over offerings from other vendors.  Scalability and flexibility were both very important.  While it could take days to deploy and provision a physical box, new VMs can be rolled out in minutes with the help of VMware templates.  VMware also provides the flexibility to create, modify and eliminate VMs continuously in AIT’s test and development environment, which helps accelerate time to market for new capabilities.  And the extensive automation that VMware provides, with products and features such as vCenter, VMotion™ and Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS), helps to minimize AIT’s administrative burden while ensuring application availability.

“We needed a true virtualization solution, not just a hypervisor,” said Briggs.  “VMware provides the only complete solution.  That made our decision very easy.  It’s helping us make tyBit and all our other products and services more reliable and more manageable.  And the flexibility it gives our business is unbelievable.  tyBit has significant advantages over traditional search advertising platforms, including click-fraud prevention and itemized billing for thousands of advertisers serving millions of ads per day.  It’s not easy to develop such sophisticated features, but VMware has really streamlined our test environment and helped us become much more productive and efficient.”
