VMware ACE Named Best-in-Class for Security and Copy Protection by Visual Studio Magazine Readers

PALO ALTO, Calif., August 1, 2006 — VMware, Inc., the global leader in virtual infrastructure software for industry-standard systems, today announced that VMware ACE has won the 2006 Readers Choice Merit Award from Visual Studio Magazine in the Security and Copy Protection category.

"Visual Studio Magazine's readers are high-level enterprise experts who know that third-party components and tools are essential to successful enterprise solutions," said Jeff Hadfield, vice president of publishing at Fawcette Technical Publications, publisher of Visual Studio Magazine. "Our influential mix of readers—application architects, dev managers and senior enterprise developers—are integral to the buying process in their organizations. For VMware ACE to be recognized by this group of IT professionals means it has earned respect in the community since its release.”

The Visual Studio Magazine Readers Choice Awards honor products in 22 development categories based on votes collected from Visual Studio Magazine readers. The Readers Choice Merit Award is given to products receiving a high number of votes that also offer exceptional value to Visual Studio Magazine readers.

“What makes the Readers Choice Awards significant is that it is the people who use these products on a daily basis, who use them in the trenches to get work done, that choose the winners,” said Patrick Meader, editor-in-chief of Visual Studio Magazine. “Winning a Readers Choice Award is a vote of confidence from the people who matter most—the people who build the stuff that makes the business world go."

VMware ACE is a breakthrough product for managing contractor, telecommuter and mobile laptop users with a single mechanism that combines security, user autonomy and centralized management. The product lets IT desktop managers apply enterprise IT policies to a virtual machine containing an operating system, enterprise applications and data to create an isolated PC environment known as an assured computing environment, allowing for rapid provisioning of a customized, secure and standardized PC setting to any unmanaged endpoint.

With VMware ACE’s Virtual Rights Management (VRM) technology, contractors and telecommuters can access enterprise networks using their own computers instead of a company-supported PC while IT desktop managers can control desktop lifecycles, secure enterprise information on PCs and enforce compliance with IT policies to prevent unauthorized access to the network. In addition, VMware ACE protects sensitive information on any PC throughout the extended enterprise, and its copy protection controls and automatic encryption capability help prevent theft, tampering and unauthorized duplication of applications, data, system settings and files from within the protected environment.

“As businesses continue to rely heavily on remote users that extend the enterprise beyond the reach of the traditional IT infrastructure, it is important to ensure these users can do their jobs without compromising the security of the enterprise,” said Jerry Chen, director of enterprise desktop platforms and solutions at VMware. “Being selected by the readers of Visual Studio Magazine as a top choice for ensuring this security shows that VMware ACE continues to meet the needs of the ever-expanding enterprise.”
