VMware Co-Founder Receives “Breakthrough in Computing” Award for Enabling Modern Computing

VMware Staff

ACM, the Association for Computing Machinery, recently announced that VMware co-founder Mendel Rosenblum is the recipient of the inaugural ACM Charles P. "Chuck" Thacker Breakthrough in Computing Award.

According to ACM, the award “recognizes individuals or groups who have made surprising, disruptive, or leapfrog contributions to computing ideas or technologies.” According to the press release, Mendel has been recognized for “reinventing the virtual machine for the modern era and thereby revolutionizing datacenters and enabling modern cloud computing.”

This award directly credits Mendel, and by extension VMware, for leading to the creation of cloud computing. After Mendel’s work using virtual machines at Stanford in the late 1990s, Mendel went on to co-found VMware with Diane Greene, Edouard Bugnion, Scott Devine and Edward Wang.

Here at VMware, we’re proud to carry on the work started by Mendel and his co-founders. We’d like to send a big “congratulations!” to Mendel. We are excited to continue the work he started by streamlining the journey for organizations to become digital businesses that deliver better experiences to their customers and empower employees to do their best work.
