At VMware, we believe successful co-innovation requires co-investment and collaboration. RADIO 2021 marks the 20th anniversary of VMware’s annual internal R&D innovation offsite. Every year, we focus on fostering discussions that amplify the impact of co-innovation and explore the opportunities change can bring.

RADIO 2021 will be an interactive, virtual experience for our employees. It takes place June 14-17 and will feature 600+ speakers who will share their insights and innovative ideas with the RADIO community.

RADIO was created by engineers for engineers. It is not just an event, but a catalyst for innovation. RADIO began in 2001 when a handful of VMware engineers got together to discuss and evaluate novel ideas. Fast-forward to 2020, when the RADIO evaluation committee reviewed 650+ employee-submitted ideas. Some of VMware’s most successful features and products from the past 20 years—including fault tolerance, virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) and virtual appliances—started at RADIO.

VMware’s culture of innovation is grounded in the belief that innovation can happen anywhere. Every day, our global community pushes the limits of what’s possible. They fix a customer problem and:

  • Release a Fling, which are apps and tools built by our engineers and community that are intended to be explored.
  • Develop new technologies with our partners in joint innovation labs.
  • Contribute to the open source community.
  • Invest in academic research.

Great innovation depends on diversity of both people and thought. That’s why VMware commits to democratizing innovation in every way possible, making investments in our people and ideas.

RADIO is organized by VMware’s Office of the CTO (OCTO). The team takes advantage of non-obvious opportunities in our business and enables a culture of perpetual innovation. OCTO partners with product teams, business operations, field sales and VMware IT to look at short-, mid- and long-term innovation opportunities. OCTO then connects innovative ideas with academia, partners and customers, the open-source community, and a variety of technical leaders across the industry. As always, the end goal is to bring these ideas to life and address real-world needs.
