Charting New Frontiers of Cloud Sovereignty for Organizations in APJ as Momentum Grows

Policy makers and Risk & Compliance leaders from across the region join VMware Sovereign Cloud Summit 2023 at Explore Singapore to discuss strategies and challenges around Sovereign Clouds

SINGAPORE, 27 September 2023: As national economies and companies become increasingly interconnected and global, issues around data and privacy have become more complex than ever. Countries and regions have also started to create guardrails around data and digital sovereignty in order to protect data. In response to the growing demands, VMware, Inc. (NYSE VMW) has built an ecosystem of 22 VMware Sovereign Cloud partners in the APJ region including key countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand to offer sovereign cloud capabilities to their customers.

According to IDC[1], sixty-three percent of respondents from a survey stated that it is extremely important to have a cloud solution that provides complete jurisdictional control and authority over data which further highlights the business need to create cloud infrastructure that provides data transparency and visibility and tightly controls data residency. In today’s growing cloud landscape, organizations need support to navigate through the complexities of a multi-cloud journey and as digital transformation brings greater reliance on data, countries across Asia are in the need to intensify efforts to develop data governance strategies and legislation to enforce laws focused on privacy, protection, and security.

“As organizations increasingly prioritize data security and sovereignty, we remain committed to empowering our customers with cutting-edge solutions that enable a more secure and resilient infrastructure. Our sovereign cloud offerings exemplify our dedication to enabling data protection, compliance and control, and providing a more trusted environment that helps businesses to thrive in today’s digital world.” said Sylvain Cazard, Senior Vice President & General Manager, Asia Pacific & Japan, VMware.

On the back of a successful inaugural event in November last year, the Sovereign Cloud Summit is back again this year, at VMware Explore 2023 Singapore. Serving as the thought leadership event for policy makers, analysts, infrastructure leaders, data strategists, risk & compliance leaders, and technology providers, Sovereign Cloud Summit is designed to further the conversation for Digital & Data Sovereignty and open discussions regarding strategies and challenges of Sovereign Clouds, and Data Classification and Management. Partners such as Lintasarta Cloudeka, Cloud HM, NCS Pte Ltd, Dialog, Integrated Global Solutions, and Advanced Wireless Network Pvt. Ltd were present at the event among many others.

To demonstrate the value of VMware’s Sovereign Cloud Partnership across industries and geographies, VMware partners shared the following:

“CCL is proud to join the VMware Sovereign Cloud initiative,” said Richard Adams, CEO of CCL. “This designation is further validation of our long-term commitment to sovereign IT capability, and the heritage we have in supporting many of New Zealand’s largest public sector organisations. Our goal is to help New Zealand organisations select the best cloud platform for their business whether that involves on-premise, private, or public cloud platforms. Our teams utilise the best-in-class cloud frameworks and tools available such as our CloudIQ service to help manage multiple and complex cloud environments, as well as our extensive expertise and professional services to help our customers transform their business.”

“At Datacom, we support a hybrid cloud approach - one that enables organisations to store data in multiple clouds depending on their own unique and specific needs. Through our partnership with VMware, we’re able to provide a robust sovereign cloud offering to organisations throughout Australia and New Zealand that require a local data storage element as part of their wider strategic and operational needs,” says Darren Hopper, Associate Director – Cloud at Datacom.

“Data sovereignty is and should be a major focus area as Australian businesses and government agencies prepare for the anticipated new Cyber Security Strategy. Organisations need certainty in their ability to keep data stored, managed, and securely within the jurisdiction of Australia. VMware understands this and Macquarie Cloud Services’ unique, government-certified sovereignty at both the cloud and data centre level is a crucial part of our successful partnership,” said Jonathan Staff, Head of Private Cloud, Macquarie Cloud Services.
