VMware Horizon, our industry-leading virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) and apps software, was one of the first products to go SaaS with the release of Horizon Universal Subscription at VMworld 2019. Since then, many Horizon customers have made the move from perpetual to subscription, making VMware’s End-User Computing business a leading driver of the company’s SaaS transformation.

But what about customers who aren’t ready to consume hybrid and multi-cloud use cases, workloads, and SaaS services?

Some competitors in the VDI space have taken a hard line with these organizations, forcing a SaaS offering on them without a plan to ease the transition from a perpetual offering. VMware has taken a more flexible, customer-centric approach. We provide customers choice and flexibility to consume our technology either on-prem and/or on SaaS. And when they are ready to make the move, we help them navigate the transition at their own pace that matches unique requirements.

Today VMware is announcing two new Horizon SaaS and subscription offerings – Horizon Standard Plus Subscription and Enterprise Plus Subscription – to meet customers where they are in their SaaS transformation (<a href="https://blogs.vmware.com/euc/2022/06/announcing-horizon-plus-subscription-offerings.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">read the blog post</a>). With these new editions, customers can deploy VDI and apps on a single private or public vSphere-based cloud while consuming new SaaS services that are being built on the cloud-hosted Horizon Control Plane. SaaS services that can be accessed with these new subscription offerings automate common tasks and optimize Day 2 operations and management of VDI and app environments to reduce IT time and cost.

These offerings provide a steppingstone to hybrid and multi-cloud VDI and apps. Once these customers are ready to unlock additional value from Horizon SaaS services that support multi-cloud workloads or management services, it’s an easy move to Horizon Universal Subscription.

Let’s hear from a customer who has embraced a multi-cloud approach to VDI.

The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) provides students a modern learning experience accessible from anywhere on or off campus. To deliver this experience, the college needed to embrace more cloud technology and establish a secure, virtual desktop infrastructure at scale.

Partnering with non-profit technology services provider, NJ Edge, the team rolled out VMware Horizon on VMware Cloud on AWS and onboarded 7,400 students to the new environment. In addition to the solution being less costly to manage, staff and students enjoy greater choice within the learning experience, which was crucial during the COVID-19 pandemic and for meeting student expectations into the future.

In reference to the benefits of adopting a cloud-first approach with Horizon Universal Subscription, Leonard Niebo, Associate Vice President and Chief Information Officer, Office of Information Technology at TCNJ, said, “When it comes to our IT, we can never be too flexible, agile or nimble. PALO ALTO, Calif.--VMware Inc. (NYSE: VMW), a leading innovator in enterprise software, today unveiled research on how to improve the employee experience for anywhere work. The commissioned study, titled “Optimizing Digital Employee Experience for Anywhere Work” and conducted by Forrester Consulting on behalf of VMware, found digital employee experience (DEX) is a critical component of how companies are enabling today’s hybrid workforce and a superior employee experience requires four integral components – experience delivery, experience measurement, analysis and remediation.

Accelerating DEX investment and adoption has become essential as companies navigate hybrid workplace challenges. According to the study, 75% of respondents have made DEX a higher or top priority since the start of the pandemic. When asked about the top business priorities driving a need for improved DEX, 80% of respondents aim to increase employee productivity. 75% hope that a DEX solution can improve overall employee experience and drive increased retention rates.  

“In the hybrid workplace, organizations are prioritizing digital employee experience as an essential investment. Digital employee experience empowers employees and IT teams to make a positive impact and do their best work,” said Shankar Iyer, senior vice president and general manager, End User Computing, VMware. “A seamless digital experience is a competitive differentiator to companies focused on hiring and retaining top talent.” 

DEX Assurance, Anywhere

Investment in DEX solutions continue to grow as companies strive to improve employee satisfaction. While only 25% of respondents indicated having a comprehensive DEX solution currently in place, a majority (nearly 60%) expect to implement one within 24 months. In addition, 84% report their budget for DEX solutions will grow to 11-25% of their overall IT budget in the next three years, demonstrating the importance of finding a comprehensive solution that supports the needs of all employees. 

Currently, two-thirds of respondents are using three or more vendors to support their DEX journey. Using multiple vendors can amplify the challenges of DEX integration by hindering root-cause analysis and compounding the difficulties in assessing DEX return on investment. This makes a holistic approach necessary for DEX improvement. Two-thirds of respondents prioritize comprehensive DEX solutions that can offer successful delivery, monitoring, analysis and remediation capabilities. It is important to integrate a DEX solution that covers all these components to create a seamless employee experience.

In this study, Forrester conducted an online survey of 537 global director level or higher decision-makers with responsibility for strategy, oversight, or implementation for digital employee experience (DEX) to evaluate the challenges related to DEX and opportunities for a holistic, integrated solution. The VMware commissioned study found companies are prioritizing digital employee experience investment to increase productivity and retain employees.

Today, every organization needs technology to manage operations and deliver services. However, due to resource constraints and systemic inequities, many social-sector organizations have not yet fully recognized (or cannot afford to embrace) the benefits of technology or the importance of <a href="https://octo.vmware.com/the-imperative-of-nonprofit-digital-transformation/">digital transformation</a>.

That’s why VMware created <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TZ86HEakg0">Good Gigs Projects</a> — an OCTO program that encourages co-innovation amongst VMware people and with the nonprofits of their choice. The program strengthens nonprofit tech capacity through what VMware calls “Tech Pro Bono Service Learning” (or just “Tech Pro Bono”). With this support, the Malala Fund team created more efficiencies around day-to-day operations, and they’re able to spend more time working toward their mission – a world where all girls can access 12 years of free, safe, quality education.

Nearly 130 million girls were out of school before the pandemic — and 20 million more may be out of school by the time this crisis is truly over. In addition to the pandemic, girls’ access to education continues to be disproportionately impacted by issues like conflict, racial discrimination or devastation from climate change and natural disasters. It doesn’t take much to expose the fragility of our support systems and the depths of global inequality. But <a href="https://malala.org/">Malala Fund</a> prefers to focus on the strength of girls around the world and their determination to learn, whatever obstacles life throws their way.

The international nonprofit team invests in local education activists ​​and advocates who are working to help girls across nine countries go to school. They also amplify the voices of young women fighting for chance and advocate for the policies and resources needed to help all girls learn. A quality education provides girls with the skills they need to thrive, more job opportunities and greater independence. Meanwhile, communities and workplaces benefit from greater diversity and fresh perspectives.

“We believe all girls are entitled to 12 years of free, safe, high-quality education,” explained Amanda Cosby, chief operating officer at Malala Fund. “Being able to react quickly is fundamental to dealing with the challenges these girls are facing, and technology is a driving force that makes that happen.”

Malala Fund met the Good Gigs team and VMware principal partner, Insight, in 2018. They formed an alliance that demonstrates just how much impact the right technology and a little expert guidance can have.

In a sector where time is the most valuable resource, the team worked together to give every employee more time from the moment they start work. They began by helping Malala Fund better control corporate-owned-personally-enabled (COPE) devices.

“Onboarding, offboarding and device management were slow and manual. Now we can empower staff to hit the ground running with a personalized digital workspace, single sign-on and higher levels of security from day one,” added Cosby.

The fight for equality is a battle against age-old prejudices that have no place in the modern world. But not everyone is happy about it. Keeping data secure doesn’t just protect sensitive personal details; it’s vital to protect the safety of Malala Fund staff, partners and recipients and to make sure nothing derails its mission.

As for giving back more time, it’s not just Cosby banking more minutes for the operations team. Staff can pick from a catalog of 20 relevant apps without having to remember 20 unique logins every day — a headache we can all relate to.

The Right Tools at the Right Time

With global operations, field staff in remote areas, and a turbulent global stage, agility is also a priority for Malala Fund.

“VMware Workspace ONE gives us a central console to manage devices anywhere in the world,” explained Cosby. “If a laptop is stolen, I can wipe it in seconds. And when the pandemic hit, we could make emergency funds available to scale up digital programs while classrooms were closed.”

This level of visibility wouldn’t be possible without centralized data and strong collaboration between staff and partners who run the programs. Luckily, the team already had the necessary tools to take meetings online when flights were grounded and could continue working with no downtime.

“We ask our team to be contactable at all times. Other than that, where, when and how they work is up to them. With hassle-free technology, they’re free to focus completely on what matters most: getting more girls back in the classroom,” concluded Cosby.

The revolution sweeping through financial services has brought new purely digital players to the market and is driving massive change through traditional banks and other financial institutions. Across the globe, customers’ digital experience is reshaping traditional banking services and relationships, and the Asia Pacific region is leading this transformation.

Partly in response to a pandemic that closed bank branches worldwide, customers are demanding almost every service to be available digitally, and in most cases, via a mobile app. Every bank is becoming a digital bank. Markets that have had a large unbanked population have, over the last few years, leapfrogged directly into mobile banking, bypassing traditional banking.

According to <a href="https://www.mckinsey.com/industries/financial-services/our-insights/future-of-asia-the-future-of-financial-services">McKinsey’s 2021 Personal Finance Survey</a>, the share of consumers in Asia actively using digital banking has jumped to 88% this year, compared to 65% four years ago. More than 60% of Asian consumers are now open to switching to a digitally-focused “direct” bank, McKinsey reports.

And financial services companies are raising their digital game. In VMware’s own <a href="https://www.vmware.com/asean/company/news/releases/2021/Gearing_Up_for_Growth_Go_Digital_First.html">Digital Frontiers 3.0 study</a>, more than half of respondents said financial services groups in Southeast Asia had improved digital services compared to before the pandemic.

The big digital shift has helped open the door for fintech players like <a href="https://www.antgroup.com/en">Ant Group</a> in China, <a href="https://www.bankbazaar.com/">BankBazaar</a> in India and <a href="https://www.afterpay.com/">Afterpay</a> in Australia to enter the market. It’s a market where the big digital names like PayPal, Stripe and India’s Paytm have already carved out substantial businesses. Along with China’s AliPay and WeChat Pay, which have been acknowledged as global leaders in fintech scale and innovation for some time.

To keep up with the disruption, traditional banks are innovating at a rapid pace and expanding their scope beyond traditional finance and are beginning to offer services that look more like those of pure fintechs. In Singapore, DBS’ PayLah app offers anything from simple payments to food orders and purchasing of public transport fares, while Thailand’s Kbank has teamed up with Grab for its own e-wallet service offering payments and loans. Services like PayNow in Singapore and the New Payments Platform in Australia allow customers of multiple banks to make payments to each other using only mobile phone numbers. Chinese giant Ping An, which started life as a conventional insurer, has become a technological powerhouse offering services across areas as diverse as healthcare, auto services and real estate. In India, HDFC Bank offers AI-powered 10-second car loan approvals.

Customer-Driven Transformation

One of the major drivers of the success of the new fintech players is their superior customer experience and ease of use. Traditional banks are innovating faster than ever to improve customer experience.

At VMworld, several leading financial institutions shared how they are transforming to become digital-led banks. Customer experience is key, powered by a move away from legacy infrastructure to agile, cloud-based platforms to keep up with what customers want.

In my discussions with banking technology leaders, there were some key common themes among their transformation strategies that stood out:

Eyeing the democratization of finance and greater competition, regulators around the Asia Pacific region seem keen to encourage the growth of new digital financial services. In this environment, some banks are even planning to shift their core banking systems into the cloud—something that would have seemed unlikely not that long ago. More regulatory leeway is also increasing the speed of change, which is adding to the pressure on all players to keep up.

And all this is happening in an environment of greatly increased competition. As well as the new breed of fintechs, companies from other industries, such as telco, are also beginning to offer financial services to their large existing customer bases.

“We are a tech company with a banking license,” is something we now hear all the time as traditional banks embrace tech and forge partnerships to compete in this new marketplace.

We are witnessing some of the biggest changes in financial technology since banks first computerized in the middle of last century and are heading into an exciting and customer-driven new era.

Singapore – 1 November 2021 – VMware Inc. is expanding its partnership with AsiaPac, the region’s premier ICT solutions provider. AsiaPac will be the first partner in the Southeast Asia and Korea region to adopt VMware vRealize Operations Cloud and VMware Cloud Director to support highly regulated industries such as the financial services, government and healthcare sectors in their multi-cloud needs. Today, the average organization runs approximately 500 workloads to drive their business[1], and those apps are distributed across clouds. As a proven solution in the Cloud System and Service Management software space, vRealize Operations Cloud will help AsiaPac unify their multi-cloud operating practice by consolidating all metrics from their VMware, AWS and Azure cloud environments into a single, unified platform. With VMware’s comprehensive security portfolio, enterprises are better covered from endpoint to end user and across application environments. Third-party testing from SE Labs certifies that environments built on VMware are better protected from advanced persistent threats(1). VMware NSX Network Detection and Response is the first and only NDR solution to receive a AAA rating in an SE Labs breach response detection test and VMware plans to deliver tapless NTA/NDR capabilities that leverages VMware vSphere to distribute sensors everywhere. VMware Carbon Black Cloud records 1.2 trillion security events per day on average and helped stop more than one million ransomware attacks over a recent 90-day period(2). VMware also offers the industry’s only 20TB internal scale out firewall specifically built to secure east-west traffic and customers have been shown to reduce firewall rules by 90%(3), making security more manageable.

Workloads Running on VMware Are More Secure

VMware is now pioneering Zero Trust security inside clouds and data centers with secure workload access. Customers can better secure communication between workloads and apps, including data communication. VMware delivers on the critical capabilities for secure workload access including:

Moving to the data center or cloud edge, security has traditionally been implemented with expensive hardware appliances that are incapable of adapting to changing app environments. VMware is announcing the industry-first elastic application security edge (EASE, pronounced as “easy”) which enables the networking and security infrastructure at the data center or cloud edge to flex and adjust as app traffic changes. VMware provides an elastic set of data plane services for networking, security, and observability, and a unique scale-out distributed architecture that enables an EASE environment to grow and shrink as app needs change.

For most organizations, rarely can they focus on securing only a single environment. VMware research shows customers are using multiple public clouds to run their business in addition to their on-premises data center(4). CloudHealth Secure State introduces the next-generation of its unified search and investigation engine to improve visibility, security and compliance simultaneously across multiple public cloud environments. Customers now benefit from real-time search to find cloud resources, visualize relationships, inspect meta data and change activity, and overlay risk assessment across multiple cloud accounts, regions, and providers into a single actionable view.

Finally, ransomware is proving effective, pervasive and profitable. VMware offers both advanced protection and rapid recovery from ransomware attacks. VMware Carbon Black Cloud can now be enabled with a simple switch in VMware vCenter, making protection from ransomware attacks simpler and faster to deploy. VMware is now announcing rapid recovery capabilities in the event ransomware gets through defenses. VMware Cloud Disaster Recovery is an easy-to-use, cost-effective DR-as-a-Service (DRaaS) solution that enables more rapid recovery at scale so organizations are better positioned to avoid paying the ransom. Customers can utilize a deep history of immutable snapshots stored in an isolated cloud file system, instant VM power-on for iterative security evaluations, and powerful orchestration for highly automated testing, failover, and failback to recover end-to-end IT apps and data sets after a ransomware attack.

VMware Is Pioneering Modern App Security

Modern apps create a new set of challenges for both security operators and developers. These apps can be made of thousands of components that communicate via APIs. This makes APIs the new endpoint that legacy cut-and-paste security approaches were not designed to secure.

VMware Tanzu Service Mesh is now bringing a new level of distributed visibility, discovery and security to APIs. Tanzu Service Mesh helps customers improve app resiliency and reliability and reduce blind spots with contextual API behavior security. New Tanzu Service Mesh advancements enable developers and security teams to each gain a better understanding of when, where and how APIs are communicating, even across multi-cloud environments, enabling better DevSecOps. Additionally, CloudHealth Secure State now delivers Kubernetes Security Posture Management (KSPM) that delivers the ability to provide deep visibility into misconfiguration vulnerabilities across both Kubernetes clusters and connected public cloud resources. The Secure State KSPM solution today supports 176 rules including CIS Benchmarks for managed services such as Amazon EKS, Azure Kubernetes Service and Google Kubernetes Engine.

VMware Leads Anywhere Workspace Security

With the shift to distributed workforces, employees must be provided with the appropriate levels of controlled access to apps and data from wherever they choose to work. VMware Anywhere Workspace is an integrated workforce solution built on industry-leading and award-winning technologies that empower employees, reduce IT silos and operational overhead, and provide broader and more effective security.

VMware SASE is adding a new inline cloud access service broker (CASB) service to help IT gain more visibility and control over app access. IT teams can more effectively apply role-based access policies to cloud-delivered apps and identify use or abuse of unsanctioned apps. Forthcoming Data Loss Prevention (DLP) capabilities will help organizations better comply with HIPAA, GDPR, PCI and other data privacy laws by preventing sensitive data from leaving pre-defined environments. The new Workspace ONE next-generation compliance engine examines thousands of posture checks on device, OS and apps. This will enable desired state and perform remediation with minimal impact on end-user experience. VMware Carbon Black integrates with Workspace ONE and is now optimized for Horizon VDI environments, helping secure the distributed edge while providing remote workers with an optimal experience.

Finally, VMware and Intel are working to deliver a solution that will uniquely help secure edge environments starting from the silicon and extending to devices and apps. The solution will create a direct link between the Intel vPro® platform and VMware Workspace ONE to enable automated out-of-band maintenance that keeps PCs up to date on the latest security patches and infosec policies no matter where they are located or the state of the operating system. Intelligent analytics with access to rich hardware-level telemetry will enable customers to proactively minimize security risk and maximize employee experience.

Managed security services remove the burden of deployment and daily management of security technologies from customers. By working with a managed security service provider, customers also have faster access to the latest innovations capable of better protecting their organizations from new and emerging threats.
