You’ve probably heard this lyric from <a href="https://youtu.be/hqrWXNMTaKY">AJR</a> on TikTok at some point over the past few months. It’s the soundtrack to countless clips that all follow the same pattern — someone starts out with one thing, then effortlessly segues into another. From pregnancy tests that turn into babies to outdated bathrooms that turn into modern spas, the <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/tag/skiptothegoodpart">#skiptothegoodpart</a> tag has racked up more than 140 million views … and counting.

What’s behind the popularity of this trend? A lot more than just a catchy song. It gets at a fundamental truth about how most people feel about change. We like the idea of transformation and the better, brighter outcomes it can create. But the process and work of actually getting there? Not so much.

It makes sense. The prospect of change is designed to make us feel uncomfortable and on edge. Chalk it up to instinct — the result of ancestors who constantly scanned their surroundings for any sign of movement that might threaten their survival.

But like it or not, doing the work of change is a constant — in life and in business. So, how can we get more comfortable with it?

I spend a lot of time thinking about this as part of my work at VMware — because in many ways, our business is change. We help drive digital transformation for our customers, particularly in their push to the cloud. But this is a major transition that a lot of organisations struggle with.

We’ve heard the same story, time and time again. Cloud migrations take too long and are too complex. They demand not just technical changes, but process and support changes that require significant leadership buy-in over the long-term. And the pressure to get it right — right now — is tremendous. The pandemic not only turned five-year plans into one-year plans, but fundamentally changed expectations about how quickly an organisation should be able to pivot in the digital space. It’s no wonder our customers want to skip to the good part.

While we can’t make the process of change quite as easy as TikTok creators make it look, figuring out how digital transformation can be simpler and faster for our customers is a huge priority for VMware. We know it’s not enough to just create great products — we also have to deliver the business outcomes our customers need, on the timelines they want, with the resources they have.

The only way to succeed at doing this is by getting comfortable with change ourselves. We have to constantly push ourselves to innovate and evolve so that we can stay one step ahead of our customers’ needs.

This dual push for change — transforming ourselves so that we can help our customers transform — is a unique challenge. It’s a bit like trying to change a tire while you’re cruising down the highway. And the desire to solve it is what drew me to VMware a little more than a year ago.

I’ve always been drawn to the change process and the opportunity to create, rather than just sustain. And as a leader, it’s my responsibility to help get my team excited about it too — not only for ourselves, but for our customers. So over the next few months, I’ll be sharing my best tips for navigating the terror — and thrill — of transformational change.

Back when I was a girl on a hill outside of Johannesburg, dreaming of sucking up the world’s pollution with a <a href="https://news.vmware.com/esg/2030-esg-agenda">giant vacuum</a>, I never imagined I would one day climb another hill—in a gondola, no less—with heads of state, billionaires, and even a few members of royalty. But at the World Economic Forum (WEF), held in the Swiss village of Davos, moments like this are the norm.

I was invited to the Annual Meeting of the Forum to share a business perspective on the role <a href="https://news.vmware.com/esg/vmwares-journey-to-net-zero-and-you">nature-based solutions</a> play in strategies to achieve net-zero, like VMware’s <a href="https://www.vmware.com/content/microsites/en/global-impact.html">2030 Agenda</a>. And our team had a packed agenda. We were there to speak with global leaders about sustainability and the twin transitions happening in energy and digitalization, listen to policy concerns about digital and enterprise sovereignty and share our perspectives on the importance of a secure, interoperable and sustainable multi-cloud platform.

But as a first-time WEF participant, I didn’t fully know what to expect. Davos certainly attracts some of the world’s richest and most powerful people, leading to a fair amount of critique of the event’s ratio of discussion to action.<a href="#_ftn1" id="_ftnref1">[1]</a> Would the first WEF gathering since the beginning of the pandemic be more of the empty promises Greta Thunberg called out previously?<a href="#_ftn2" id="_ftnref2">[2]</a> Or could the current zeitgeist engender dialogue that leads to real solutions?

In my view, the answer is probably a bit of both.

A somber tone for the event was set by bookending addresses from <a href="https://www.weforum.org/events/world-economic-forum-annual-meeting-2022/sessions/special-address-by-volodymyr-zelenskyy-president-of-ukraine-8fb26bbcb1">Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky</a> and German Chancellor Schultz. While sobering, I still found optimism in the conversations. Yes, I heard ambitious promises and some action plans that seemed fuzzier than others. And yes, the parade of luxurious black “internal combustion engines” pulling up—mere steps from the Congress Centre—for meetings to discuss the urgency of net-zero efforts was not lost on me.

Digesting some of the contradictions, here’s the reality that I kept reminding myself of: we don’t have the luxury of using purity tests to discount discussions as important as addressing climate change, inequality and food security. These complex, interconnected and global issues need every nation, every industry and every business leader at the table and engaged. And the World Economic Forum absolutely succeeds at assembling many of the stakeholders who are in positions to move the needle.

Something that surprised me was the breadth and nuance of the discussions. There were very few “single-issue” conversations. Instead, there was a consistent thread of interconnected dialogues like energy, agriculture, health, digital transformation, cyber resilience and social justice, along with impacts of changing global structures and multilateralism.

For example, the war in Ukraine was obviously top of mind for every attendee. But I was struck by how many speakers drew a clear connection between the war and countries’ dependence on fossil fuels. Accelerating the transition to clean energy was presented as not only a way to achieve better environmental outcomes, but as a way to create more resilience and better foreign policy outcomes.

This search for win-win solutions defined many of my conversations at Davos. While there was a clear recognition that a better future will demand certain tradeoffs, there was also a wariness of polarization and the idea that we’re playing a zero-sum game. Put simply, it’s not a matter of investing in climate or energy, health or digitization. The world needs to invest in climate and energy and health and digitization—and when we do, the sum will be greater than the parts and we’ll all benefit.

By the end of my week in Davos, many connections were made, many conversations were had,  and I was witness to many commitments announced.<a href="#_ftn3" id="_ftnref3">[3]</a> Will this lead to measurable outcomes? It’s too soon to know for sure. The months and years ahead will reveal the actions behind the good intentions.

But my final impression from the World Economic Forum was one of hope.

After riding that gondola up to the ski chalet where the closing event was being held, I found myself among many of the “Davos elite” I’d brushed shoulders with the whole week —and I still felt a bit out of place. But then I spotted a table of young people—the Global Shapers,<a href="#_ftn4" id="_ftnref4">[4]</a> a group of amazing leaders under 30 who were invited to Davos to share and evolve their ideas for a better future. I recognized a few of them. They had been the first in line after my own session earlier in the week, eager to talk about how innovations like ML and LiDAR could support carbon auditing and verification for companies like VMware who have made commitments to planting <a href="https://news.vmware.com/esg/vmwares-journey-to-net-zero-and-you">trees</a> as part of our commitments. So, I approached their table—and they were kind enough to welcome me with open arms to join their table.

We immediately launched into a spirited discussion, and I got to hear more about their passions and projects. For instance, I learned about a project to regenerate and reforest the Sahel, an area stretching coast-to-coast from Senegal to Djibouti. But beyond the specifics of any one conversation, what struck me most about these Global Shapers was their clarity of purpose and optimism. It wasn’t a matter of if they would achieve their goals—but when. And that attitude was contagious.

That’s when I realized that this might be one of the most important parts of the World Economic Forum. It’s a convening that allows people and ideas to reconnect with the power of possibility. To remember that big things are achievable. To recharge our batteries for the journey ahead.

SYDNEY, Australia-VMware Inc. (NYSE: VMW), a leading innovator in enterprise software, today unveiled research on how to improve the employee experience for anywhere work. The commissioned study, titled “Optimising Digital Employee Experience for Anywhere Work” and conducted by Forrester Consulting on behalf of VMware, found digital employee experience (DEX) is a critical component of how companies are enabling today’s hybrid workforce and a superior employee experience requires four integral components – experience delivery, experience measurement, analysis and remediation.

Accelerating DEX investment and adoption has become essential as companies navigate hybrid workplace challenges. According to the study, 75% of respondents have made DEX a higher or top priority since the start of the pandemic. When asked about the top business priorities driving a need for improved DEX, 80% of respondents aim to increase employee productivity. 75% hope that a DEX solution can improve overall employee experience and drive increased retention rates.  

“In the hybrid workplace, organisations are prioritising digital employee experience as an essential investment. Digital employee experience empowers employees and IT teams to make a positive impact and do their best work,” said Shankar Iyer, senior vice president and general manager, End User Computing, VMware. “A seamless digital experience is a competitive differentiator to companies focused on hiring and retaining top talent.”

DEX Assurance, Anywhere

Investment in DEX solutions continue to grow as companies strive to improve employee satisfaction. While only 25% of respondents indicated having a comprehensive DEX solution currently in place, a majority (nearly 60%) expect to implement one within 24 months. In addition, 84% report their budget for DEX solutions will grow to 11-25% of their overall IT budget in the next three years, demonstrating the importance of finding a comprehensive solution that supports the needs of all employees. 

Currently, two-thirds of respondents are using three or more vendors to support their DEX journey. Using multiple vendors can amplify the challenges of DEX integration by hindering root-cause analysis and compounding the difficulties in assessing DEX return on investment. This makes a holistic approach necessary for DEX improvement. Two-thirds of respondents prioritise comprehensive DEX solutions that can offer successful delivery, monitoring, analysis and remediation capabilities. It is important to integrate a DEX solution that covers all these components to create a seamless employee experience.

In this study, Forrester conducted an online survey of 537 global director level or higher decision-makers with responsibility for strategy, oversight, or implementation for digital employee experience (DEX) to evaluate the challenges related to DEX and opportunities for a holistic, integrated solution. Questions provided to the participants asked about their organisations’ DEX challenges and opportunities, as well as their current and future plans for investing in DEX solutions. Respondents were offered a small incentive as a thank-you for time spent on the survey. The study began in February 2022 and was completed in March 2022.

The VMware commissioned study found companies are prioritizing digital employee experience investment to increase productivity and retain employees.

VMware announced that Vijay Pendakur has joined the company as their Global Head of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

Introduces VMware ContexaTM Threat Intelligence, Powering VMware Security to Stop Threats Others Simply Can’t See

SYDNEY, Australia – June 2, 2022 – VMware Inc, (NYSE:VMW) today announced significant enhancements to its unique lateral security capabilities to help customers achieve strong security for both modern and traditional applications, across multi-cloud environments. Ahead of RSA Conference 2022, VMware introduced <a href="https://www.vmware.com/security/contexa.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Contexa</a>, VMware’s full-fidelity threat intelligence capability that observes the breadth of VMware’s network, endpoint, and user technologies. VMware Contexa Leaves Attackers with Nowhere to Hide

VMware Contexa is a full-fidelity threat intelligence cloud that sees what other solutions don’t and stops what other solutions can’t. With a privileged position in the infrastructure, Contexa observes and understands the inner workings of both modern and traditional apps every step of the way— from user, to device, to network, to run time, to data.  

VMware Contexa records and processes over 1.5 trillion endpoint eventsi and over 10 billion network flowsii daily, along with strategically curated threat intelligence data captured through technology partnerships. This rich context is further analysed using machine learning and insights of over 500 researchers across VMware’s Threat Analysis Unit and incident response partners. Today, Contexa uncovers over 2.2 billion suspicious behaviours dailyiii, achieving zero touch detection and automated, graduated response for over 80 percent of these events.

An Innovator in App Modernisation Secures Apps at Scale

VMware Tanzu is a trusted partner for companies in their app modernisation journey, helping them build, operate, and better secure modern applications at scale on any cloud. Today, VMware announced further enhancements to its Modern Apps Connectivity Services (MACS) solution that allows customers to build security into the full application lifecycle. With VMware Tanzu Service Mesh’s capabilities, customers now gain deep visibility and insights into the inner workings of application micro-services as they interact with each other via internal (East-West) APIs—and help to better protect them. VMware Contexa allows Tanzu Service Mesh to understand the context of the internal traffic flows, and therefore more accurately identify legitimate internal traffic from the internal movement of attacks such as ransomware. 

A Pioneer in Virtualisation Protects VMs Like No Other

A leader in virtualisation, VMware has introduced innovative and powerful distributed security capabilities for its multi-cloud platform over the years, allowing the company to make customer workloads more secure on VMware cloudsiv. As innovations in server virtualisation have driven higher virtual machine densities on a single physical server, less lateral traffic is visible to a network tap. This makes it difficult for a Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) technology or security analytics solution to identify lateral security threats by analysing sampled data such as network flow records or selected network traffic taken from taps.

VMware has introduced new capabilities to help customers identify and respond to malware and ransomware attacks in the network by integrating its advanced intrusion detection & prevention (IDS/IPS) and Network Traffic Analysis (NTA) directly into the virtualisation layer with VMware NSX. These new enhancements, powered by VMware Contexa, now inspect and analyse every packet and every process to provide extremely high-fidelity alerts that other systems relying on sampled data cannot match. 

Anywhere Workspace Platform Advances Security for Employee Devices

New innovations to VMware Workspace ONE will make it easier for IT teams to manage and better secure all employee devices, while contributing to Contexa’s rich data set. VMware is today introducing Workspace ONE Mobile Threat Defense, which incorporates technologies from Lookout, a leader in the mobile security space. The new offering will help protect employees’ mobile devices from a wide range of application, device, and network-originated threats. Workspace ONE Mobile Threat Defense can be activated within Workspace ONE Intelligent Hub. For IT, this means there are no separate apps or agents to download or deploy, and vital information – including alerts and suggested resolutions – is conveyed via a resource that employees use for daily work. 

VMware is also introducing new Workspace ONE capabilities that will make managing updates/patches even easier and elevate the security posture of Windows devices. For instance, the new capabilities will enable IT to automate critical updates to pre-approved groups, hand test patches more likely to create issues, and pause or rollback patches if an issue is detected. Further Workspace ONE enhancements are detailed <a href="https://news.vmware.com/releases/anywhere-workspace-security" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">here</a>.

Joins the XDR Alliance to Modernise the SOC

VMware is announcing it has joined the <a href="https://www.xdralliance.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">XDR Alliance</a>™, a partnership of leading cybersecurity industry innovators committed to an inclusive and collaborative XDR framework and architecture. VMware is well positioned with very mature endpoint and network offerings that offer a high level of insight and context for identifying and responding to threats. The mission of the XDR Alliance is to work in collaboration to make an open approach to XDR a reality for SecOps teams and help them effectively protect their organisations from cyberattacks.

Today, every organisation needs technology to manage operations and deliver services. However, due to resource constraints and systemic inequities, many social-sector organisations have not yet fully recognised (or cannot afford to embrace) the benefits of technology or the importance of <a href="https://octo.vmware.com/the-imperative-of-nonprofit-digital-transformation/">digital transformation</a>.

That’s why VMware created <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TZ86HEakg0">Good Gigs Projects</a> — an OCTO program that encourages co-innovation amongst VMware people and with the nonprofits of their choice. The program strengthens nonprofit tech capacity through what VMware calls “Tech Pro Bono Service Learning” (or just “Tech Pro Bono”). With this support, the Malala Fund team created more efficiencies around day-to-day operations, and they’re able to spend more time working toward their mission – a world where all girls can access 12 years of free, safe, quality education.

Nearly 130 million girls were out of school before the pandemic — and 20 million more may be out of school by the time this crisis is truly over. In addition to the pandemic, girls’ access to education continues to be disproportionately impacted by issues like conflict, racial discrimination or devastation from climate change and natural disasters. It doesn’t take much to expose the fragility of our support systems and the depths of global inequality. But <a href="https://malala.org/">Malala Fund</a> prefers to focus on the strength of girls around the world and their determination to learn, whatever obstacles life throws their way.

The international nonprofit team invests in local education activists ​​and advocates who are working to help girls across nine countries go to school. They also amplify the voices of young women fighting for chance and advocate for the policies and resources needed to help all girls learn. A quality education provides girls with the skills they need to thrive, more job opportunities and greater independence. Meanwhile, communities and workplaces benefit from greater diversity and fresh perspectives.

“We believe all girls are entitled to 12 years of free, safe, high-quality education,” explained Amanda Cosby, chief operating officer at Malala Fund. “Being able to react quickly is fundamental to dealing with the challenges these girls are facing, and technology is a driving force that makes that happen.”

Malala Fund met the Good Gigs team and VMware principal partner, Insight, in 2018. They formed an alliance that demonstrates just how much impact the right technology and a little expert guidance can have.

In a sector where time is the most valuable resource, the team worked together to give every employee more time from the moment they start work. They began by helping Malala Fund better control corporate-owned-personally-enabled (COPE) devices.

“Onboarding, offboarding and device management were slow and manual. Now we can empower staff to hit the ground running with a personalised digital workspace, single sign-on and higher levels of security from day one,” added Cosby.

The fight for equality is a battle against age-old prejudices that have no place in the modern world. But not everyone is happy about it. Keeping data secure doesn’t just protect sensitive personal details; it’s vital to protect the safety of Malala Fund staff, partners and recipients and to make sure nothing derails its mission.

As for giving back more time, it’s not just Cosby banking more minutes for the operations team. Staff can pick from a catalog of 20 relevant apps without having to remember 20 unique logins every day — a headache we can all relate to.

The Right Tools at the Right Time

With global operations, field staff in remote areas, and a turbulent global stage, agility is also a priority for Malala Fund.

“VMware Workspace ONE gives us a central console to manage devices anywhere in the world,” explained Cosby. “If a laptop is stolen, I can wipe it in seconds. And when the pandemic hit, we could make emergency funds available to scale up digital programs while classrooms were closed.”

This level of visibility wouldn’t be possible without centralised data and strong collaboration between staff and partners who run the programs. Luckily, the team already had the necessary tools to take meetings online when flights were grounded and could continue working with no downtime.

“We ask our team to be contactable at all times. Other than that, where, when and how they work is up to them. With hassle-free technology, they’re free to focus completely on what matters most: getting more girls back in the classroom,” concluded Cosby.
